Reposting to get some more feedback.What do you guys think of a segment in a Pokemon game vaguely resembling a survival horror game? I'm brainstorming a gym in my game that temporarily turns into a vague Resident Evil homage but with Pokemon. Here's the gist of what I have so far.

>Takes place in an electric type gym that doubles as a high tech research facility
>It's a giant facility with many floors and rooms, with the gym leader and battle area on the top floor
>As soon as you enter, shit goes south as alarms go off, the power goes dark, and the building is put into lockdown
>You cannot leave the facility, and are trapped inside until you complete the story
>At first the building seems empty, must solve some simple puzzles to advance to the next floor (like find the switch that unlocks the stairs, turn on backup power, etc)
>Learn that the facility was trying to create a new artificial Pokemon, accidentally created a dangerous parasitic Pokemon that can affect both Pokemon and People
>Start running into trainers that have been infected, special sprites for these show they have been corrupted by the parasite 'mon, their Pokemon are also infected and have special sprites
>Never referred to as zombies, just implied. Beating them cures them and they leave and show up in a designated saferoom instead
>Gets progressively hard with each floor. More zombie trainers, have to find more hidden switches or keycards to advance, etc.
>Can find potions and revives by searching the floors since you can't leave to go to a Pokecenter, if all your Pokemon faint you still can't leave, and instead warp to the nearest saferoom in the facility.
>The gym leader on the top floor is patient zero and is host to the lead parasitemon. Defeating them finally defeats the parasite and ends the lockdown.

I would want to put this early on in the game, since this wouldn't be that big of a challenge to a late game player, but for someone only one or two gyms in it would actually be fairly tense.

Anyone have any experience troubleshooting AdvanceMap warps? So I've been making interiors and reusing old maps in order to do so. But the warps to them act really weird. At times the warp moves to be a black hole, at other times, I end up warping to a whole other map.

Also when Advanced Map makes a new map, I assume it automatically looks for "real" (FF) free space, right?

Sounds cool on paper but will suck if you actually do it. Anyone inconvenienced by it will save scum to get around it. The ghosts possessing the Channelers in RBY is the same exact thing and they didn't need a forced lockdown to make it scarier.

Here's some suggestions:
>Keep everything you have there except for the forced lockdown
>Every time you beat a trainer, it immediately follows up with a wild encounter with the parasite Pokemon (in the game lore it's the parasite jumping off the trainer trying to infect you instead), giving you a chance to catch it
>The parasitemon has a signature attack that functions similar to OHKO moves, but if it lands, the parasite also transforms into that Pokemon (lore wise it's actually the parasite infecting the Pokemon but functionally you can just combine the game code of an OHKO move and Transform if it's possible)

If it's like gen 2, they use a single interior map for all of the Pokemon centers and just load up different event scripts. It's more efficient that way.

It's strange because Advanced Map will read it as two different maps, but you're right, that's probably what is happening. Should I assume the same holds true for the upper floor of the PKMN center as well as the shops?

Not much to show, but I'm using Blender to make some fakemons and regional variants for my game. I rarely have time to work on it, so I don't expect it done for the next million years or so, but in the meantime here's a regional variant Ralts I made for my region called Canafora. These Ralts have become steel/electric type due to the area they thrived in, and have become fascinated with human technology. I made the horns a slightly different shape, and they have steel bands running across their hair-hat-dome thing that are vaguely supposed to resemble the paths on PCB boards. Also, it's hard to see here, but they also have shorter skin flaps hanging off the backs of their legs. That and the gradients on their arms become more prominent as they evolve. They're supposed to have a sort of "high-tech" look to go with their fascination with computers and smartphones. And yes, the phone is part of it, Canaforan Ralts love their gadgets.

For the shiny version, the colors stay exactly the same, except it's holding a Gameboy instead of a phone. I'm still working on that one.

Feedback is appreciated, please let me know what you think.

Interesting! Which generation's engine are you using for your game?

As for the Ralts, I wouldn't make the two "circuit" lines on its head symmetrical. Circuit paths don't neatly line up. Maybe make them thinner and more zigzaggy? Also, the dark blue of its head makes him look lopsided. Normal Ralts has a light green and light red head, so it looks more balanced with its white body. The gameboy idea is fucking brilliant.

Having the whole Ralts line turn its incredible sense of empathy and devotion towards gadgets instead of people is really clever. I like it. But I don't like the idea of them being steel/electric. If Canaforan Gardevoir has the mind of a normal Gardevoir, except it doesn't care about humans, it should still be a psychic type. It makes sense to lose the fairy typing if it's not an empathetic, soothing matron, though. Similarly, Gallade without the sense of duty and protection would still be a psychic but not a fighting. I'd make one of them psychic / electric and the other psychic / steel. Just my two cents.

I'm planning for R/S/E/Fr/Lg for this. I agree it looks a bit top heavy due to the colors, but that's actually by design. Since it wont be covered in metal plates or armor or whatever, I wanted it to still look "heavy" in a way, like its bowl hat was made from a high end PC case. I am still waffling on the typing though, keeping psychic in there somewhere seems like it would be more unique.

Fair enough. But I'd balance it out for the sake of aesthetics. Maybe some sort of gadget-bracelets / legbands in the helmet's color? A heavy helmet on top of a white body looks weird.

Definitely keep the psychic. I'd make Ralts / Kirlia / Gardevoir Psychic/Electric, and Gallade Psychic/Steel.

Very cool. People are going to say that your Nerdevoir is pure waifu bait, but fuck them. I like it. Don't mention that it crafts the glasses, just have them be a part of her that resulted from her evolution. And here's an idea. Instead of "she's constantly browsing the internet", make it so that she sees and interprets electromagnetic information. Like, she can't browse the entire internet, but if she stands between a dude on a cellphone and a cell tower, she'll understand/sense/interpret the conversation. She'd be constantly bombarded and overwhelmed by all the information in the air, making her skittish and flustered.

What are your plans for Gallade?

Oh I'm fully expecting the waifubait comparisons. It's supposed to be a parallel to that. Instead of looking like an effeminate dancer, Canaforan Gardevoir looks more like a fujoshi internet addict, like if Kuroki Tomoko were a Pokemon.

Gallade I'm planning to have more of an electrician/powerline worker motif. That would have been more were the steel/electric type would work. Instead of blades out of the elbows, I'm planning metal prongs from the forearms that resemble voltage meter prongs. Evolving Kirlia into Gallade would require a special item instead of a dawn stone, a gadget you get from the computer valley that its implied Kirlia has to eat to become Gallade.

Yeah, this definitely makes a lot more sense now that I think about it, I think I'm going to tune this line more this way.

As for the EM waves, that definitely fits the motif, but I think by the time they become Gardevoirs, they'd have mastered that skill. Catching random airwaves is more Ralts' thing, and Kirlia's whole reason for eating smartphones is to get better at sensing and reading them. Just like how regular Gardevoir's psychic abilities are so strong that it can form black holes, Canaforan Gardevoir by that point is so attuned to human tech, it has basically become part smartphone. That also ties into it's anti-waifu style, it's become antisocial and awkward because of the weird stuff it reads on the internet.

That makes sense. Based on what you'd said earlier, I was imagining more of a jumpy and frazzled Gardevoir, because she's always listening to ALL the radio stations unless she consciously blocks them out.

While I'm not familiar with Gen 3, for Gen 2 you're going to be spending a lot of time editing source .asm files, similarly to how you would edit any other file for standard programming. Personally, my workflow is to test the track out in 0CC-Famitracker (using the N163 to emulate the wave channel, and some premade instruments so that I don't go out of the garbage drumkit limitations that gen 2 has), and then either make the .asm file from scratch based on the famitracker module (finetuning it along the way by making builds of pokecrystal to listen to how it sounds), or if I'm feeling lazy I'll turn the famitracker module into a midi, convert it to .asm via MIDI2ASM, and then finetune it.
Don't fall for the GB Note meme. It's tempting to try it out when you're starting, as the idea of making music via text editor is rather scary, but it's a garbage program, it causes way more problems than it solves, and because of gaps in the program you're going to have to do some text editing anyway. It's infinitely easier to just learn how the .asm files work and edit them manually, and because GB Note is so fucking bad it doesn't take much longer, either.

How far can I push a gba romhack can I add gyms,fairy type, mega evo, items?

Making the jump from romhacking to fangames isn't going to be very smooth so you're best off picking one and sticking to it.
I imagine you could probably implement most features with GBA hacking, but it requires a lot of skill with coding you probably wouldn't have starting out. In such a case using one of the fangame engines would be a lot easier, since very little coding experience is required to actually make new shit.
As for RPG Maker you'll need XP specifically. I'm pretty sure torrenting should work but it goes on sale for 5 dollars on steam super frequently, so piracy isn't really that big of a need with it.

RPG maker is for Essentials, which is not ROM hacking (it runs on its own engine). Advanced Map is for ROM hacking, which is compatible with CFRU (which is a prerequisite for the Dynamic Pokemon Expansion you're referring to).

If you intend to make a .gba file, go with ROM hacking. If you want more QOL features (in hacking) go with RPG maker.

Also the problem is only Advanced Map 1.95 can read the expanded pokemon data (you need to manually hexedit it though), but Amap 1.95 is reeeally buggy so most people use it *only* for editing Pokemon data and not for actually building maps.

Also if you have the time/energy, I highly recommend the decomps instead. Porymap is much better than A-Map (even if deleting maps is a pain).

You also need original code built from the ground up. That's the main difference between a fangame and a game that can legally stand on it's own. If it's all original, but still a rom hack, it's still illegal.

Does anyone actually intend to profit off of a romhack that has only changed the graphics? I mean, at that point, it's just a reskinning of an old game, maybe with a new story. In terms of ease of usage for an absolute beginner:

Leon&UltimaSoul > CFRU > decomp

In terms of ease of usage once you're in the thick of things, it's the opposite way around. Also keep in mind Emerald has a MUCH better wiki/FAQ for the decomp so if you like Firered (for whatever reason), CFRU is your best bet.

CFRU can be applied to older ROMs which use IPS/UPS patches.

But it sounds like you intend to make a game with CFRU as the base (ie, you don't already have an edited ROM), in which case, start with CFRU.

Also editing Maps/Pokemon Data doesn't qualify as a patch unless you're applying a patch. You need to settle on whether you're using CFRU or Leon's base (or the decomp) and use the tutorials from there on out.

Or just dive in and redo things later, either way.

It's possible but it's a pain in the ass. To get adavancemap to work with clover you have to edit the map header (or something similar) in the rom. For music you legit just need to change the table offset in sappy.xml.

What if a region didn't use water/grass/fire as its starter trio types? What if the region were so remote and different from the norm that they used a different triangle for their starters? What if the starters were ground/steel/ice, or psychic/fighting/dark?

Steel as a starter isn't great because Steel resists Normal, and the early game depends very heavily on Normal moves meaning Steel has a keen advantage over the other types (same as Rock and Ghost).

Tried to play renegade platinum for 2 hours and I just am not feeling it. Something weird is going on where I don't like how much pokemon choice I'm getting. It feels kinda wrong. You're at the mercy of the hack maker and all their choices. Drayano's hacks are known to feature all pokemon up to that point as obtainable so there has to be a lot of overpopulated routes to get all 490 odd mons into one region.

If this bothers you, maybe consider trying a hack that picks and chooses what pokemon to include. But then you have the same problem of not liking the hack maker's choices, just for the opposite reason.

Thoughts on having a Fire/Water/Grass/Dark/Psy/Fighting starter option instead of just fire/water/grass? Your rival starts with a Rock-type regardless of your choice.
Just in every single hack I've played with fakemon, I box the starter since all three are usually shit, so I wanna give people more of an option.

The idea is that rivalchan is a horrible fucking trainer (The "WE BOTH GOT OUR STARTERS LETS FIGHT" battle, their pokemon has only status moves) but rich and spoiled so they got a pseudo. Eventually it becomes Rock/Dragon, it's a diamond dragon thingie.
Your starters would eventually be:
Fire/Dragon
Water/Steel
Grass/Fairy
Dark/Flying
Fighting/Steel
Psy/??? (undecided. Might end up being Sound type but probably not since coding is Hard.)

Well, we're sort of pulling from mythology, fables, all of that sort of stuff. Another one of our psuedos is Medusapphire. We have mons that don't directly relate to the theme (a bug/electric firefly) but most of our mons are. We're also going to try to have a rival choice between a girl and a boy and have em dateable with optional postgame content. In terms of plot and all that we're focusing on the dex for now. Highlights of the dex IMO...

I'd honestly be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of starters. I already hate picking between three. Make sure to have them all available at some point; SLLD for example did this well with two rivals giving you an egg of their respective starter after you become champion.
That said, as someone who grew up with his parents reading him fairy tales almost every day, what you've posted so far sounds very intriguing to me and I'd love to play that game if it ever gets finished.

Start by making a basic outline of the player's progression through the entire game. Then make some super basic maps so that the game is "playable" from beginning to end. If you're using a premade region, then you can skip this step.
Then slowly fill up each of the areas with the rest (ideally chronologically if you want to be able to release a demo or two along the way)

Would there be any interest in a hack like this for one of the other games, potentially Gen IV or V? Possibly including some additional humor to reflect the fact that the player is forced to use bad Pokemon. There's a kind of variation on pokemon games I'd like to see made so I can play it but I don't think it'll ever happen so I'm thinking of making it myself.
Instead of presenting you with a big campaign, it would let you play mini-adventures made by other players. You might think of it as the Mario Maker of Pokemon games, maybe mixed with Warcraft III's map editor, in case you are familiar with it.
You could load any adventure created by other users, or make you own. The editor would:
>allow you to make a small game, 1 to 3 gyms max.
>modify terrain in an easy way, place grass patches, buildings, etc (think of Warcraft III's map editor). the world map wouldn't be very big
>create NPCs, customizing their appearance through a simple char editor and writing their text
>maybe even modify values for existing pokemon and moves
>wishful thinking: would be fantastic to be able to create your own types and even pokemon (maybe combining limbs, bodies, heads, etc from other pokemon and colorizing them)
In a way it would also be similar to Yoda Stories/Indiana Jones and his Desktop Adventures. They were short, easier roguelikes made to be played during work breaks. But instead of being procedurally generated, the missions would be created by users.

Would anyone find this appealing?

It'd severely limit the teambuilding aspect of the games but you could make nice little chess composition like challenges where you have to figure out how to beat a fight with the gimped team you're given

Has anyone ever used Spiky's DS Map Editor? I keep getting this error, and I can't figure out what's causing it. I've tested Heart Gold, Platinum, and Black, and it won't load any of them.

The amount of content generated by users usually depends on the accessibility of the tools.
You could create a platformer in game maker in hours, or days depending on your sharpness, or make a level in mario maker in minutes, without having to learn new skills.
But you are right, maybe there's no point since romhacks already exist.

Still doesn't work, unfortunately. When I try to load a ROM, it asks if I want to load extracted data. If I say yes, it shows me pic related. If I say no, then it shows me the message I posted before.

So here's the synopsis for Pokemon Cascades. You, your childhood friend, and your childhood rival are students of the Trainer Academy, a school where kids learn to be trainers and go on a journey to become Champion. In order to graduate, you have to pass major tests and get to the league. Along the way, you encounter the Bellum Forces, the private security force of the Casca Foundation. They're are uncovering ruins involving a sealed Legendary Pokémon. You challenge the gym leaders normally, but you have to solve puzzles first. Like the Trainer Academy, the gyms are funded by the Casca Foundation. The Gym Leaders' jobs are testing the skills of the students during their journey to the league.

Okay, I think I've figured it out. I realized that, even though it rejects the ROM, SDSME subsequently creates a Data folder for the ROM. You have to put your ROM in that folder, then go back to SDSME and load the ROM from the folder. It will take an eternity to load, and your PC will tell you it's not responding, but it works.
I tested it with Platinum and Black. It loads Platinum normally, but it claims that it can't locate Black. Nevertheless, as long as you do not use extracted files when prompted to, you can ignore the error messages and it will let you see the data.

What anon said. Rom hacks take years to complete. And that’s true for some that use vanilla regions with vanilla pokemon. What you’re talking about is a huge undertaking. All you have is an idea, a story, and a region map you made in paint.

If you’re looking for praise or people to help you, you’re going to need something a lot more concrete; majority of the scripting done, all the sprites, or all the maps for interiors and exteriors of your region. Until you have something in game to show, it’s all just talk. Everyone and their mother come here posting their ideas for rom hacks thinking it’ll be some great little project to do in a couple of months. In reality, it’s thousands of lines of scripting, creating tilesets and sprites, making maps, getting mad and wanting to quit a million times, stepping away for a few weeks and forgetting where you left off. Then comes tons of trial an error, thousands of lines of dialogue, and making sure it’s fun. A year later when it’s all finished, 4 people download it, 2 of which will say it sucked or completely broke it in some way, and then everyone moves on.

The craters even though they look more uniform to the pallet still look like they dont belong. If there were some custom boulders/rubble dotting the area it may look more natural.

Don't try to emulate GF, their maps are fucking boring and rom hacks are already suffering from a severe lack of creativity. I do agree that some people take it too far trying to make their maps look "natural", but I prefer that to people slavishly attempting to copy GF's every last design choice down to the letter. They're not infallible just because they made the game.

They skirt the legalities of it by not using any copyrighted code in the app itself. By asking you to have legal backups of the game they avoid being responsible for illegal downloads. Its free to play out the door.

And the things you pay for I think are "Ocarinas" (HMs) and other non copyrighted stuff so theyre "totally" not selling Nintendo product and have plausible deniability of making money off of the IP.

Nintendo can still pressure them with a C/D but its likely that either they arent aware of, or arent terribly concerned with PokeMMO. If it had more popularity it would likely have been shut down a long time ago.

I can't imagine they're just ignorant to PokeMMO's existence when its more well known than a chunk of the fangames and projects they actually have taken down.
