We had insane discussions that would last for months such as Sylveon/Xerneas/Yveltal's types, the 13th hour on Laverre's clock, the new type (no es fake), the Mewtwo form stream, Pokémon Origins, Megas, Xerosic. It was also the first time a Pokémon region was unapologetically based off a real-world country (I know Unova is supposed to be the US, but it wasn't supposed to be a copy of it) so the speculation was insane.
Gen 7 had more tame and organized news, meaning more content per news update but that meant more time between each news. A lot of the new things to get excited about were much like XY's but different (instead of Mega forms it was Alolan forms, instead of France it was Hawaii, etc.) so it didn't feel as fresh. The speculation of Alolan forms was pretty fun tho.
And you're right, everything about Gen 8's news where underwhelming from the very start.
