You know why this movie flopped? It had too many nugen Pokemon in it. They aren't recognizable to the majority of viewers. If they kept it to just Gen 1 Pokemon that everyone knows I guarantee you it would have done better.

You can usually double the budget due to marketing. Plus, a movie isn't made to break even or to make a little profit. Movies are usually only considered successful when they triple or quadruple the initial investment.
Detective Pikachu didn't bomb, but it was also not a huge success. The chances for a sequel depend on whether they can expect the market to grow after the fame of the first or not.

Detective Pikachu is already planning for a sequel. I also remember some talks about their being a sequel to the videogame as well when the movir first came out.

It doesn't matter because the game and movie have nothing in common other than both having a talking Pikachu, a kid named Tim with a missing dad and being set in a place called Ryme City, all characters, locations and plotpoints are completely different. It's not racewashing because it's an adaptation in the most loose way possible, the two versions of Tim are not connected in any way.
