Thinking of making a hack/fangame based around BW2 since it has the full dex since im bored, might end up being a rather big project.
Theres lots of complaints about the current pokemon games and as a side project I thought id dip my hand just gonna throw out ideas be sure to suggest anything (if anything is confusing or needs clarification just ask
>18 gyms for each type (not a miss translation this time)
>some changes to status effects
>full dex up to gen 5 (idk if theres sprites for gens 6-8)
>extra dungeons
>wild area that connects every town/city
>gyms scale as you get more gym badges so you can choose whichever route you want to go

Have you done ROM hacking before? DS ROM hacking definitely has not advanced far enough for a lot of this to be feasibly possible yet. A fangame would probably be a more realistic approach for this.

The status effect change im talking about is not set in stone I just thought to make things more interesting being poisoned should be like a special attack burn, or maybe lower defense other status too should be a lil more spicy in my opinion

I have some game making experience and now a couple coding languages so it shouldnt be that difficult, what I dont have experience in is all the art related stuff nor am I a story teller in any capacity, just a comp sci student with a lot of time on his hands especially with all my classes being online come the beginning of fall semester

I see, in that case a fangame could be a lot more realistic. That being said, this isn't something that you could really do alone. Even basic fangames have teams of a handful of people working on them. But I wouldn't say it's impossible, just very ambitious.

Forgot fairy type was in gen 6 that would make it 17 gyms or maybe the 18th gym could be a weather team, for more interesting gameplay some of the gyms dont have to be type specific they could be certain competitive teams like stall or weather but that might annoy some people

Not to discourage you, but this might not be possible.

From my experience playing Moon Black 2 (a hack of Black 2) and asking its devs about it, I'll answer with what I know. (it's the only hack I've played)

NDS game hacking isn't that good. As far as I know (idk much), you can only change how the character/pokemon look and what they say, as well as some graphics. You can also change movesets and such for pokemon. In MB2, they don't have all the mons up to gen 7; instead, they replace mons, e.g. Greninja replaces Castform, because it transforms into Ash-Greninja in the rain, so they're using Castform's ability for this. This means that the hack is limited in mons by the amount that B2 has. But stuff like ADDING gyms is not possible.

MB2 tried adding fairies, and it's not working well. Go to discord to ask the makers. Again, more gyms won't be possible.

You can get sprites for gens 6-8 from smogon. Just google e.g. "gen 6 sprites smogon" and you'll get the page. Ask MB2 devs for the moving sprites, if you want that, since they do it.

Idk about this.

If you want all this stuff, you might need to make your own fan game. BUT I think GBA rom hacks are more advanced in what you can do with them. Again, Idk much, so you'll have to ask the right people. I've seen some FR hacks that have all the mons up to gen 8.

You probably have a lot of motivation to do stuff like this and haven't been killed by a job, so that's a bonus. How far along your studies are you? As in: What courses have you taken? I'm a CS grad.

Im currently in my sophmore year but I was in some accelerated compsci thing in highschool with a fake majors system that allowed me to take those basic html/css/javascript/c++ classes so im familiar with those languages, in my freshman year I did more classes in c++ and python

I've recently seen someone developing an area-making tool for the DS games over there, so you might want to check that out.
Depending on your ambition, you could actually do this, instead of just finding it daunting and never doing/finishing it. It might take you a long time, but if you're fine with that, it would definitely be worth it.
I've followed someone who has been making his own fighting game for a decade (making the art; he just used Mugen for the engine).
Make sure to REALLY ask around and get info from the experts. They probably know about A LOT more tools out there than you could expect on the first page of a Google search.
Most of the things you'd want are already there, like the sprites and the area-makers and whatnot. Find some people to join in with you, since you said you're not a story-teller.

It might take years, it might take a month. I'm not an expert.

For the CS advice:
Learn something practical, like writing clean code and learning how to refactor. Object-oriented design and design patterns would make things really easy for you if you allow them to.
Don't write everything in one place; every function (in principle) is supposed to do one thing only. If you make a function that does some damage calculations, writes to a file, and refreshes the graphics, then you're doing it wrong. Look up stuff like SOLID design principles.

Right now im debating doing a gba hack to get a feel for everything then making a continuations which would just be the same game with ds graphics or something, theres more documentation and support for gba hacking and being overly ambitious can cause problems

The dude made a town in 2 hours, and this is a hack he made years ago. It's probably much easier now with newer tools.

So yeah, go for the GBA hack first. I think it's a good idea; at the very least you gain experience.

ROMs aren't an open-faced sandwich where you can do whatever you want with it; we don't have the source code. You need it to be leaked from Nintendo. Otherwise, the only way to do it would be to read the machine code. Look up images of what that looks like.

Even for the recent DP leaks, from my understanding, some parts are missing, others are encrypted in a proprietary format.

The only parts you can really mess around with are stuff like graphics assets, which wouldn't be encrypted in any game ever.

designing a game is a very different set of skills from coding. You need both for what you're trying to do. Making a game fun to play and well balanced is arguably much harder than coding a few new features (if you were making everything from the ground up, that'd be another story)

The art and storytelling skills are obviously a plus, but not as necessary. For the art you can get away with using the official Pokemon assets. Your game will look generic, but it won't look bad.
For storytelling, it's a pokemon game so people won't really care even if the story is almost inexistant. Good storytelling can really make your game stand out, but it's easy to fall into cliché try-hard edgy stuff. It's better to go with a shallow , almost barebone story and focus on good gameplay if you aren't confident in your writing skills.

Gen 3 and earlier have full decomps so you can pretty much do anything you want within the memory limitations. But like 95% of romhacks are of gen 3, so your game won't really stand out at all.
