Who the fuck translate Pokémon games in spanish? Monkeys? Why spaniards don't know how to translate a fucking game from english to spanish? A bocajarro instead of combate cercano, fuck off

that was pre XY, but its so fucking funny, how do you fuck up be translating Slam as Door Slam and never fix it for like 15 years. I'm so grateful that at least the latam anime had latam translator with enough sense to translate bullet seed as "bala semilla"
To add to that

>Competitive is translated as Tenacidad
7 years and is still unfixed

Spain has the worst translators in the planet, they also always try to make jokes or add "quirky" idioms that weren't there to random characters for no reason and its never funny

Not OP but alud means any general falling of material, while avalancha is specifically for snow. Rock slide should’ve been alud

A bocajarro means Point blank, which is fitting but still sort of not correct, never had an issue with this one

Both Avalancha and Alud mean the same thing, snow falling down. They messed up when Rock Slide was added in gen I, and when an actual Avalanche move was added, instead of fixing their stupid mistake they doubled down

From what I understand, when GF sent things to be translated, they did it entirely without context. On top of that, they had different people translating ALL CAPS WORDS and lower case words. So, for example:
>"YOUNGSTER JOEY wants to fight! YOUNGSTER JOEY sent out RATATTA! RATATTA used TACKLE"
One translation team gets "YOUNGSTER JOEY" "RATATTA" "TACKLE"
The other gets "------ wants to fight!" "------ sent out ------!" "------ used ------"

Some translations were made with the limited use in their first game in mind. Like Splash, a move that basically means hop in Japanese, because it was only used by Magikarp (and Gyarados) it got a name that fits what Magikarp is doing when it uses the move but not when a Pokémon like Hoppip or Buneary uses it.

Because the translator is just given the word "SLAM" and told to translate it without any context for what's being slammed. It's the same reason the Italian translation fucked up the translation of "Pound" as "Libbra" (the weight).

Spaniards seem more alergic to english words and will translate anything as humanly possible.
Keep in mind a few of those are a product of text space limits. I thought they changed those in XY but it seems I'm misremembering, I don't play the games in spanish anymore.

Check counter btw, that's a great one.

I always say, keeping the english names for pokemon in spanish was probably the best localization decision ever made as you don't get retarded names and as a plis you don't have to remember two names for mons when discussing in english like germans and french do.

Like the case of most dubs, latin dubs aren't made with cross-franchise consistency in mind(they used the spanish names for cities in gen 1 and english from then on for instance), they just take the original dialogue and put it in spanish, which results in a better dub.
Same as it happened with Dragon Ball for instance.

I've played both in English and Spanish. Each has its pros and its cons.

Today I play in English because I discuss with /vp/ and the anglo community more. But it is full of idiotic decissions too. For example, Spanish has superior conceptual names for types. Plant > Grass. Sinister > Dark.

English has dumb decissions all around like "Fossilised Dino" for the Plesiosaur, for example.

And worse of all, if you choose to play in English, you are forced to see heights and weights in lbs. and tonnes and stones according to the stupid American system of measure. You can not choose to play in English while simultaneously using metric system. That shit makes me angry as fuck.
