What is the point of making a Pikachu clone every new gen?

It's not like they're going to replace Pikachu as the series mascot with one of these things. Why do they bother bootlegging themselves?

I hate the fact that most Pikaclones are boring as shit and whenever they have some interesting features, their designs are fucked up because they're made with 3D in mind.
