There is a new beta theory, it seems that the male Pokémon trainer appeared in a 1997 magazine may have inspired Tracey of the Pokémon anime, what do you think?

No, Tracey is a staff self insert. He was originally going to be a Bug specialist, but we they had to give him Marill instead of Heracross because they wanted Ash to catch one in Pokémon GS.

Why would they want to give Ash a Heracross instead of Marill? It seemed like Marill was the main shillmon of that time.

1) Ash would've gotten Totodile, which would've supplemented his primary Water Type slot for Johto.
2) They never gave Ash a Pikaclone, only his traveling companions (ie: Dawn and Pachirisu, Iris and Emolga, Bonnie and Dedenne). This is probably to not divert attention away from Pikachu.
3) Herracross is based as fuck.
