Dynamax has so many components and possibilities technically, but those possibilities will never happen in a real match because Dynamax heavily favors set-up sweepers and especially flying type set up sweepers.
There is a reason why every team for singles was Gyarados, Hawlucha, Darmanitan-G, Excadrill, Ditto, and some filler, and why Doubles was filled with Togekiss/Dragapult holding Weakness Policy.
When your mechanic’s only downsides are removing your own Sub and not having it later is pretty bad.
Z-moves, on the other hand, were actually Dynamic.
Being forced to hold a Z-crystal meant that you had to carefully build your team and play around the game as to keep your Z-Crystal user alive to actually use it. Meanwhile, Dynamax would just halve all your damage to keep yourself alive and you could just use 5 of your teammates to Dynamax instead. You also sacrificed holding items with Z-moves, so you have to compensate for having a mini-nuke.
But that’s not all. Instead of Max Protect, each Status move has their own secondary effect when boosted by a Z-move, creating unique sets like Z-Celebrate or Z-Heal Bell.
>>44509372A month is far longer than Dynamax deserved, and even then, Smogon Doubles and Ubers still thought Dynamax was still too broken after months of having them in the tier.
In fact, Smogon Doubles was banning shit that Dynamax made broken just to protect it, and then people realized Dynamax was just a shitty mechanic.
So not only is it inbalanced in a Legendary Meta with Legendaries that have moves designed to counter Dynamax, but also in doubles where “Dynamax is balanced for Doubles” was a major argument to why it should stay.
