maybe if contests involved more interesting minigames, similar to pokeathlon, it would be better—and certain kinds of pokemon could have advantages over others in these games based on their category (Coolness, Beauty, Cuteness, etc).
additionally, now that pokemon amie/camp/whatever seems to be a mainstay, bringing back pokeblocks/poffins to increase contest categories could be a thing.
maybe a pokemon can choose between its ribbons to have a different ribbon animation when thrown into battle (similar to master rank ribbon in ORAS). alternatively maybe certain ribbons could give the pokemon a "title" similar to those given by marks in SWSH.
