The reality of the situation is that such a Charizard card has high value, but only to some people. However, it is some cardstock, foil, and ink, which is how everyone else is going to look at it- just a little printed trinket that has no value to them whatsoever.
On the one hand, your family's failure to acknowledge that collector's value exists is wrong. On the other hand, you're wrong for suggesting that not valuing the thing is wrong.
