Isn't it just to reduce the number of moves they would have to animate/make effects for?

If its becoming that much of an issue they should probably just reuse animations. They're already doing it for NPCs and Pokemon, not like anyone would give a shit if they do it now.
Hell, most of the move animations in Sword and Shield have been done far better in previous games.

has anyone managed to make gear up work in doubles yet? it could have potential but of the two pokemon that learn it the one that is a mixed attacker doesn't have Plus or minus and the one that has both abilities is a physical attacker that should always be using gear shift. Its a move thats on the verge of having some good doubles application but it doesn't have the range of access it really needs. every Plus or Minus mon should get access to it. No exceptions.

If move slots are becoming a precious commodity then nothing moves that do exist should be given to everything that can make use of them. Electrify should be given to the weaker lighting rod/motor drove mons. Give ninjask water shuriken. Give flower shield to some actual grass types other than cherrim. Make wonder room actually do something useful. The shit thats removed and kept is so random and inconsistent.
