Can't games just drop the "abstract turn-based" shit already and become what Pokemon is actually supposed to be like?

How much further does the hardware need to go? Who would care about the franchise being rebooted and being done with turn based shit besides stinky compfags?

Hey, dumbass, if you change the fighting style, it becomes a different type of game. Turn-based combat is the core of the game. Spin-offs can do all the other shit all they like, but they're not going to change it. To Game Freak, there's no point in changing it because it's profitable the way that it is.

No, it's not. Catching Pokemon and battling with them is the core of the game. Actually getting to battle with them instead of just clicking menu options and pretending that they're fighting would improve that.

Cities aren't like they appear to be. Nor the routes, nor the battles. Everything is just an abstract representation of what they're supposed to be.

Sure, on the overworld. But the gameplay has never been a hardware limitation. Face it, anon. Pokémon Red and Blue came out on the same system that plenty of other non turn-based games came out on as well. Pokémon has been meant as a turn-based JRPG since its inception. If they wanted it to be a real-time action game, they still easily could have made a fun little top-down game with Link's Awakening-style combat with different Pokémon having different abilities like items. But they didn't. Because they knew exactly what they wanted to make.

since the fucking 1st season of the anime we've known what Pokemon battles are supposed to be like. They're not two monsters standing still and taking turns attacking each other. They made the games to represent what they're supposed to be.

So explain all the other genres on the GameBoy that find other ways to represent what they do. Explain why Pokémon couldn't have done something more like those games. Why couldn't they have made a game where you move your Pokémon around on a little top-down battlefield, or hell, even a side-view angle where the battles are played like a fighting game? The GameBoy has handled much more impressive things without problem, there are fucking kart racers on the GameBoy, those aren't turn-based.

Intriguing idea, ngl but the main problem is that you don't have many buttons (just the d-pad, A and B), I guess you could cause the game to set your moves/powers (like how you change your items in Zelda), or cycle through powers with select idk
Could be interesting for a fan game

They could have made the game to work with the buttons they have, it wouldn't necessarily have to have the same four-move system at all in that context. They could have done literally anything they wanted.
The point that I'm ultimately trying to make is that nobody understands just how much freedom developers have in deciding what type of game they want to make. So it's not that I'm against the idea of Pokémon branching into different genres, I think ideas like what I've said would have been awesome. I just think it's fucking retarded when people use the phrases like "supposed to be" when they have literally no idea what they're talking about at all.

Other turn-based games don't have a ton of other media that show what the battles are actually like, so they can get away with it because there's nothing to compare the turn-based abstractions too.

With Pokemon, however, we know what the reality of the battles is, and the gameplay doesn't live up to that reality at all.

This argument is retarded too, because nobody ever says that the games shouldn't get better. It's possible for a game series to be better by just building and improving off of its foundation. When you keep the same base gameplay, but actually evolve it in meaningful ways and try new things without straying too far from what you laid down, you get the Pikmin series, where people may disagree on which game is the best, but the fans generally agree that they're all good for different reasons. The reason people don't want a complete genre overhaul is because when you throw out everything and try to start over every single game without learning anything from your past, and just throwing random shit at the wall, you get the fucking Sonic series. And I don't think I have to explain what's wrong with Sonic.
I want the games to grow and evolve. I don't want the games to be the same shit over and over. What I want is for Pokémon to be BETTER at being what it is.
