USUM has the single hardest boss fight in the series but overall it is extremely ez, Necrozma bumps its difficulty up alot but I'd still say Plat has better teams overall
Not to mention the exp share makes raising a team take 0 effort

To be honest, I actually kind of prefer it when the difficulty is poured more into the enemies' team composition and AI rather than just the grinding aspect, because regardless you can make any game easy if you grind long enough. Exp. Share just makes it faster to do so.

USUM does have good EVs/IVs on trainers, the Totems can be genuinely rough, the game doesn't shy away from putting pseudolegendaries and outright legendaries on endgame teams, and it's unequivocally the toughest game to Nuzlocke.
I do agree Plat is 'harder' if only because the exp share and the amie ripoff make your team too strong, but as far as enemies go USUM is probably the 'hardest' in the series.

You dont really have to grind in older games if you battle everyone, you'll just end up a little lower level than the boss, which I consider more fair anyway since its a pokemon game.
If exp share is on it basically always makes you either above or about the same level as the enemy, which is basically a steamroll if you know what you're doing

Gen 4 is harder, but USUM has better difficulty because DPP's difficulty comes completely from level jumps and one well designed team (Cynthia's). USUM has variety throughout the game. Having a pokedex that's 2x bigger doesn't hurt either.

Furfrou is rather infamous for being tough to deal with early game because it has high stats compared to unevolved Pokemon and Fur Coat makes it tough to kill. The XY double battle on Route 6 with 2 Furfrou is thought of as one of the game's hardest battles for a reason.

Except the difference is that RBY and GSC had trainers with retarded AI that would oftentimes literally not attack you because they choose moves randomly, while USUM has trainers with maxed out EVs/IVs, Totems that incorporate genuine strategy into their fights, a genuine brick wall you need to plan around in Ultra Necrozma, and more.

Are there anons here who played prismatic sun (the difficulty rom hack of usum)? I play Drayano's hacks a lot with my own "difficulty setting" (no healing items/set/no exp share/only permanent team members). I find regular usum to be pretty challenging when I play them (no z moves as well) and I don't know if the harder versions are a bit too much. I'd rather use my own handicap than play harder games where I am forced to grind and switch team members for every boss.

You're encouraged to use the exp share and the petting since the game accounts for it.
It's well made. Other than a few definitely bullshit fights (mostly towards the end) the game almost never forces you to grind.

I really hate playing with the exp share (fuck gen 8). My next game is going to be eternal X, if I can't stand it than I'll just play regular usum. I just don't have a reason to use the bad team members if everyone get exp.

How do you think a team of dogs would fare in the hard version? Arcanine, midday Lycanroc, Granbull, Zygarde dog, mega Manectric and Stoutland. Assume perfect IV when breedable and I guess ev trained if it's a must.

Dog team sounds pretty good, though it seems like you'll have a rough time with ground types/EQ. And yeah, EV training is necessary, but it's ridiculously easy to do.

It was the last good pokemon game but still just a DLC for SM.

SM was a incomplete game and USUM was a 40 Dollar/Euro DLC. There were many things wrong with Gamefreak even years before Buggeru in Anusu.

Remember XY? Actually there was going to be a lot serious, detailled plot. Instead we got a incomplete region, kanto pandering and a messed up lore (No Z? stuff Zygardeforms into Hawaii, prease undastandu making Game very hard)

Most of what you can get at that point are shitmons, though. The game doesn't let you go ahead and get a Makuhita, which would stomp it pretty easily. Magnemite's good for it but still gets fucked if you pick Rowlet since Smeargle will know Ember. Grimer's the only pokemon tanky enough to handle it otherwise and I doubt many people are picking up long term team members from route 1 and the trainer's school. Throwing a technician pokemon in early game is one thing, but doing it when your options are so limited is what makes the fight hard.

Red and Blue are literally the easiest games in the franchise. I don't even think most trainers have DVs and their movesets are the four most recent moves they can learn for their level with exceptions to Gym leaders and rival fights. Trainers using Pokemon that evolve via stones were infamous for not having full movesets. You didn't even have to purposefully take advantage of all the broken shit in gen 1 to stomp.

Yellow, on the other hand, is tough if you try to free-wheel it the same way you didn't Red and Blue and don't know about gen 1 cheese. If you do, that game's a stomp as well.

Ratticate in gen 1 and 2 are the worse random encounters. By some reason the they're everywhere on the midgame, gave good speed and attack and learn Hyper Fang when your best attack is probably still 40 BP. In the remakes they also get Super Fang a lot earlier for that sweet removal of half your health. Surprisingly strong for a early route shitmon

It's difficult to get through but not due the the battles. I didn't like Hau's character, which is weird since I was fond of Hop in SwSh.( Maybe it was easier to consider Hop my rival since he had more of a competitive streak than Hau did. Plus Hop was established in ShSh as your close friend and neighbor, so maybe that's why I ended up feeling a bit more attached to him than I did with Hau.) And then Lillie's constant moaning about how she's useless and not a pokemon trainer were just grating. And then you had the constant tutorials breaking immersion and the slow pacing. I almost dropped the game after beating kahuna Hala.

Having one (1) difficult fight doesn’t make up for the fact that the rest of the game is you grinding though 1 Pokémon trainer encounters, shitty dialouge and tutorials even as late as before the league. It’s fair to consider BW2 challenge mode, Plat or Emerald harder, more balanced experiences overall.

Fun fact: If an opponent trainer has less than 4 moves that late in the game, it's usually to make sure they use the three moves they have more often. Due to the AI types being pretty poor and very general purpose, they have to make some concessions if they want Pokemon to use good moves. Otherwise you have cases like the Arcanine in those same teams that have Roar, which is literally useless in a Gen 1 trainer battle. On a similar note, USUM Hau also has at least 1 Pokemon with an empty move slot.

Special mention to totem Togedemaru for not being exactly difficult but just being a bitch to deal with. In my most recent playthrough I went in with an incredibly unbalanced team in terms of typing and availability and I still swept besides those fights.

I played FRLG when I was like 6-7 and due to my esl-ness I didn't know what the verb save meant so I thought that you had to beat the game in one go like a roguelike.
