It only ruined a temporary meta. Boots are only ridiciulous because everything that isn't a choice user or isn't running an item-dependant set has it. Once CT drops and all the stallbreakers are back then it will just be like any other item - it has its uses but not massively gamechanging.

Boots are perfectly fine for the meta, they allow for rock weak mons to actually function and make rocks not as centralizing. Not every team needs rocks and not every team needs defog now that boots are in the meta. Sure its annoying to see a blissey with boots but for the most part boots are used on offensive mons so you can't even use the scape goat of stale

Rocks are perfectly fine for the meta. They were never centralizing and rock-weak mons were still viable. Volcarona being a prime example. Every team still needs rocks because even with the boots, they're still crucial.
Sure it's annoying to take a bit of damage but for the most part pebbles punish stallmons and pivots so you can't even pretend that the boots primarily benefit offensive mons.

Boots replaced a roster issue (SR weak Pokemon were innately harder to justify and thus were seen less) with a core gameplay issue (it is hard to punish switches and make progress in a game if both players are playing well). Arguing whether they're better for offensive or defensive teams is kind of missing the point, since SR is important for making progress no matter what teamstyle you bring.

Volcarona is currently the 12th most used mon.
In gen 7, it's the 36th most used, but if you subtract all of the mons that didn't make the dex cut, it's the 13th most used.
So yeah, it was really being held back by the pebbles. Not by the legendaries and megas, but those gosh darn pebbles.

Yes. They still enable a vulnerable Pokemon to switch-in and do its job, and even if the opponent resets the rocks, that's losing a turn of momentum, but can't be abused with switching and pivoting.

If you want a good example of why chip damage is a good thing, look at how obnoxious Teleport Clefable has become in this meta.

Sneaky Pebbles became the penalty and nerfed playstyles that revolved around switching (like stall).

CT is also introducing wallbreakers far more powerful than Dracovish, KB and Darm-G
also, outside of maybe Glicor, most of those stallbreakers lose to Toxapex 1v1 without a full stallbreaker set

They're not. Their prevalence is the product of centralization. Specifically centralization of switching, which isn't something that can be banned in any practical way.

"Competitive" doesn't imply "official". It implies competitive. As in, 2 players competing against each other. Smogon meets that definition.
