Isn't serena, didn't travel with Ash and was for all intents and purposes, just another rando regional Gym leader, meaning when they needed a challenger to rank Ash up, it was more authentic than just another random fighter of the day like Meganium dude was.

Korrina popped up, Ash made reference to when he beat her, they traveled around for a bit as well. Shit was there. You can try to start the ALOLA chant but it's pretty clear that Alola just doesn't have much else going for it which was why they even brought the characters that were gone half the time anyway.
