How come gen 8's designs were so bad when gen 7's were so good an interesting? How did it all go so south so fast

I l8ke Gen 7 and 8 equally. Neither has the best pokemon ever, but almost none are offensively bad other than a few exceptions like Duraludon and Stonjourner. Gen 7's main problem is having a bunch of single-stage Pokemon like Dhelmise and the dragons be either version exclusives or only available when you get to Poni Island.
