It's one of the few(or even only) starters that was clearly inspired by an interesting mythological concept that differentiates him from every other pokemon-and becomes actual part of the in-game mythology thanks do 6 gen's entries.
Aesthetically talking,it immedialy gives off all the informations you may need(such as typing,stat spread,etc.)
But the best part is how it makes its way into the pokemon ecosystem in one of the most biologically brilliant ways possible:by being a microecosystem itself,making it not only a very cool monster,but also an extremely interesting animal.
Not that the other starters aren't interesting/cool,but imo they lose the competition
