Tue poll is unfair to larger or more even generations because people voted for 1 pokemon from each generation. For example, Greninja probably got 90% of the Kalos votes, while Pikachu could've only gotten 50% of the Kanto votes. Another way to put it is this:

This ranking is only relevant in terms of the most popular per generation, not overall. Gen 5 was pretty interesting because it lacked standout frontrunner Pokémon. The closest one was, of course, Chandelure, who ended up winning. Three Gen 1, three Gen 2, two Gen 3, two Gen 4, three Gen 6, two Gen 7, and two Gen 8 Pokèmon ranked higher than it. Showing that there was statistically tougher competition in all other generations for everyone but Greninja who basically ran away with the vote anyway. And when you have so many creatures, some are just going to naturally end up being more important than others, since it's impossible to give that many equal treatment. Just about every monster collecting series has a "mascot" for this reason.
