Switching is the best defensive option in singles.
Allowing it unrestricted is broken because players can just switch around infinitely until they get into an advantageous position.
But being able to prevent it entirely is also broken because players can trap a necessary mon and get kills for free.

They'd either ban HDB entirely or not ban them at all.

Thanks for proving my point. The first Dugtrio suspect test for its presumed brokeness on stall FAILED. Then Dugtrio+Zard-Y offensive core was discovered and the ability was almost immidately suspected and banned. You can stop parroting this dumbass fucking meme now.

The only defensive ban smogon has EVER made was M-Sab in gen 6... a literal day before gen 7 started, so it was effectively legal for the entire gen.

Now, it's a different problem, with Megas gone (and Dynamax banned) defensive pokemon are way too good at their role when compared to the offense (especially when you ban all the powerhouses afterwards).

Smogon was created in gen 3, when there was approximately 2 good items. So item clause would've been retarded back then.
And after that, there was never really a need. If an item was busted, that item could be banned. And there was no item that would be okay on one mon but busted on multiple until gen 8.

Previous smogonfag here (2000+ elo several times in both 6 gen and 7 gen), I wish I invested my time in VGV instead. 1v1 is so one dimensional and 50-50 heavy, whereas in theory VGC has more options therefore more freedom and strats. Also Smogon are a bunch of cucks.
