Do you feel like Pokemon as a franchise has it’s potential squandered? Or do feel the franchise is fine as is with some slight changes here and there?

It think it's fine currently. There are some issues, but things like the Wild Area and Mints are improvements and hopefully the beginning of the direction the series is going. Even the dex cut and new plan of making DLC instead of 3rd versions show potential if done correctly.

They could be minting money with multiple popular anime series that don’t involve Ash (not saying “for ADULTS” but for something beyond toddlers). They have great waifu- I mean character designers, and the world isn’t very fleshed out so some very good writers could do some interesting things.

It peaked during gens 3-5.
More than 3 good generations wasn't necessary.
They got seemingly worse at making games and the franchise outstayed it's welcome. It has now tried to fill more space than it can.
Franchises should die with dignity instead of being milked for money to the point when they can't be milked any further.

The ideal number for a finished franchise may be 250-300. They are re using concepts and they have made unnecessary slot filling pokemon.

That's the issue kiddies - the devs have no interest in making it anything but what it's always been. That every partner involved also thinks like this, that they aren't as idiotic as to try and change its market demographics, but instead are trying to expand other demographics, while still holding onto their core market should be an indication of where exactly we stand.

Pokemania peaked after gen 2 and right before gen 3. The second wave was from gen 4-5 and then it just plateaued (turned to shit) with X and Y and beyond

What do you mean "squandered"? Because if your meaning of squadered is "dont you think instead of normal 3-year-dev-time RPGs we got 7-year-dev-time-insane-fucking-huge games like BOTW then that is kind of a stupid question isn't it? Literally ANY franchise could possibly have some kind of huge-long-devtime-huge-budget game. Tetris could go all out and make a super visually impressive psychodelical cinematic Tetris.

Now if Pokemon SHOULD have that kind of development cycle I'm honestly not sure. I presume that whoever is in charge of the franchise has already done analysis and shit that show them it is better to have a new generation every 3 or 4 years instead of every 6 or 7, but I wouldn't complain if Nintendo and whoever else decides the budgets hired more support staff for the games so that even though they kept the same dev-time they were able to have more or atleast prettier assets and content. Also some evolutions are not precisely for the better, I'm replaying BOTW right now and all the overworld movement I do is kind of a chore on the replay, and when I imagine a Open-world Pokemon with maps this big I could easily see it become even more tedious, so that is a kind of evolution that I think would be for the worse if attempted.

In my opinion it was doing fine till gen5, maybe there were better looking DS games but Pokemon was still doing fine given the limitations of the hardware, but switch to 3D models starting with gen6 is clearly too much for GF and they can't keep up, which brings the games down. Combine that with people buying anything with Pokemon name regardless of quality, and you can see why GF is content with doing just the bare minimum.

I do, to an extent. I think the underlying gameplay mechanics are perfectly fine, they could just be polished way better. Things like the battles being a bit more quick paced, with less pausing to explain shit, when text could pop up concurrently with things happening, and weather/stat effects not being so slow.
They also have 3D now, and they could be doing a lot more with it, rather than having big huge overworlds that have nothing in them. I'd rather more compact, busy environments.

Agreed. We don’t need an early rodent, early bird, early bug, new pseudo, new waifu, etc. every damn gen. Should’ve never been more than 100 new Pokémon in any generation, and fewer like gen 6-8 would often be even better.

i feel like they have fit themselves into a niche that they have to incentive to branch from or experiment or grow, as long as they keep churning out money. pokemon as a game is exactly equivalent to pokemon as a cartoon, formulaic, nothing high concept, endlessly repeating, easily digestible for young kids. it's fine for what it is, filler material that kids eat up in exchange for printing money. it is the biggest money making franchise of all time, it has become a staple beyond the initial fad and will keep churning out money for low effort for generations. as a business its potential is not squandered, and may well be maximised. if by potential you are imagining vast open world high res mature games, or games that take the world in a different direction, or for them to ever do anything more than a reskin for the mainline games, then yes they are squandered potential for art or soul or innovation.

IMO nothing about the franchise is "actively bad," if that makes sense. The more I think about what I hate most about the games, I feel like they're things that could just have more effort put into it. Primarily, the world of Pokemon. It doesn't feel badly written. It feels like it barely exists, because there's so little. Besides SOME rivals or other major NPCs, no one feels like a character. They're just a human with clothes and one personality trait. They don't have any real goals or opinions or struggles.

And the story is just a kid competing in a sports tournament, essentially. There's no sense of urgency. It's simply, I'll go fight because it's a fun game mechanic. There's no reason for me to explore the locations, or meet new characters. The games pretend Pokemon are part of a whole world, but the Pokemon and battling, even if they're what I love most anyway, are all the games have.
