Eh. I enjoyed I Choose You excluding THAT scene more. If you only care about battles, then you won't like the movie at all—there's literally only like two Pokémon battles. And the scenes with Toren, the super shy scientist, made me feel secondhand embarrassment, but the movie was "OK." Nothing to write home about.

The story focus on five characters all with some kind of personal problem. Ash mostly serves as something connecting all of them and helps them overcome this. Team rocket acts as an instigator to a crisis they all have to solve.

It's a bit hard to go into more details without spoiling anything so I recommend that you just watch it. The plot isn't all that complicated and I found it enjoyable. There's some focus on relationships although not the romantic kind.

You can see it as the usual Ash goes to place. Ash meets person who has a problem. Something bad happens. Ash helps and the person with the problem overcomes the problem in the process.

It's the usual formula you see in many episodes except instead of on person with a problem it's five people with a problem instead.
