Why did they make this thing such an unbelievable pain in the ass to get? As a kid I literally didn't know enough other kids with a DS, let alone a copy of the game, to get it

They did, but some fans got a sort of hacky solution working. You have to change the DNS settings, look it up. You also have to use a super out of date WiFi type because the DS couldn't handle anything newer.

I think the idea was that there would be like LAN parties for the underground. It sounds really dumb but there are worse half-baked ideas like the FRLG minigames (fuck the Dodrio game!) and mail in Gen III or the Ereader things.

The good thing about spiritomb is that you can get it in the pokewalker, Dream radar or in a trade from Yancy as well. In Sinouh, you can cheese it if you have two DS consoles and two Sinouh games by reentering the underground a bunch of times.
