Attack fusions/combos. They already tried to do it in RSE (there's unused code for fusing gust + ember to get heat wave in double battles in RSE), plus contests have combos of a sort, and the pledges are also combo-like. It's clearly something that's on their minds. Either have some moves get better depending on which move you used last, teach your pokemon new moves by fusing their old moves or create your own "custom" super moves by doing the equivalent of mystery dungeon move linking

I can see that. Their excuse can also be to turn majority or all battles in that Gen to double battles. Starting off as a trainer we will select our starter, and be given a free mon that works well with all starts and evolution is potentially based on what team combinations you use the most. Super gimmicky so it meets the requirements.
