Gen 2 was the last good set of games.
Every aspect of the game was a straight improvement including a visit back to the old first game's region and a gym challenge with their gyms, resulting in a total of 16 badges and the added bonus of a battle with the previous game's protagonist. It was a sequel worthy of being called a sequel in every conceivable way.

Gen 3 started GameFreak's trope of 1 step forward, two steps back with an absolute ton of good mechanics removed in favorite of a few 'alright' ones.

bw wanted to be a proper jrpg without leaving the parts that'd make kids understand how it works right off the bat. difficulty is seen as bad now, and if kids accidentally click "yeah i already know" then they'll have to learn the easy ass mechanics on their own.
i remember not liking the explanations as a 13 year old, but i still played despite that if that's any indication of how good the base system is

Gen 5 box legendaries had fuckin rescue hero feet lol, and the starters were forgettable monotypes. But besides that I still think it's the 2nd best gen, souly Because of haxerous and bisharp.
