We give Ishihara a lot of shit, and he deserves it, but he was good in handling the multimedia output at the beggining(and mostly still is).
Its also a developing franchise for kids that happened to start when the adults that are now in arrested development were kids and now that they like kid aesthetics it fits like a glove.
Compared to starwars, it helps that it doesn't have a "main story" that was over(the one most people think is is the anime and that, while shit, introduces you to the overall concepts of the franchise, going back to the good sinergy).
Compared to Mickey, its a more engaging concept, Mickey doesn't have a "main story" which makes him less a character and more of an icon. The fact there's multiple species(which allow for multiple characterizations, mainly the ones you headcanon in the games AND as proper characters) AND they're playable means they can be both.
And I could probably go on, its simply a concept way too good(comercially at least) that, to our chagrin sometimes, is competently handled.
