Ash vs Tobias episode has a lot of good things in it like Ash using Heracross's sleep talk again, Sceptile knocking out Darkrai, Ash flipping his hat backwards, and Pikachu vs Latios. But of course the fact that Ash loses the league to some literal who with legendary Pokemon sours the episode.
Battle aboard St. Anne has a lot of funny moments but on one hand it shows Ash is still an easily swayed kid when he trades away his Butterfree after getting sweet talked into it, but on the other the fact that Brock and Misty don't do anything to make him reconsider or really think it over seems kinda out of character (even after Brock comes out of his love high)

Ash vs Tobias doesn't bother me anywhere as much as it does other people. We already got the emotional payoff the series was building towards (Ash beating Paul with Infernape), the loss is legit in-universe (since Tobias is blatantly OP) and Ash even manages out of it with some dignity by getting two KOs in.

Kalos was much worse (where Ash never actually beats Alain despite the confrontation being built up throughout the series AND Alain being revealed to be working for the evil team) and Unova even worse than that (where Ash loses to some kid who didn't even bring six Pokemon - how could it be more humiliating?).

Unova was definitely Ash's worst lost hands down, but I think what made the Sinnoh League loss in particular sour for me and many others was how blatant the staff didn't want Ash to win that they'd resort to just give some trainer legendaries. Also the build up and foreshadowing to a rematch between Buizel against Lucian, Torterra vs Bertha's Hippowdon, a full battle vs Flint and Cynthia that in the end meant nothing just made it feel more anti-climactic (and they even tease a battle between Ash and Cynthia in the final episode of DP). Maybe I didn't mind the XY finals as much because I found it hard to connect XY Ash to the Pre-BW Ash and I was used to him choking the league.

Both Pikachu and Naganadel's fight against Tapu Koko looked really good, the final clash of Z moves looked good, the use of Type:wild was amazing, and it brought Ash's relationships with Tapu Koko and Kukui to a satisfying climax.

It felt like the resolution of one of the few truly multi-region subplots, as opposed to mere callbacks like Charizard in Unova. It wrapped up one of the anime's better handling of the game mechanics of traded pokemon leveling up faster and overleveled pokemon disobeying.

>Pika and Goliath
Another good handling of the advantages of evolution, such as most Hyper Beam users being fully evolved. Additionally, another multi-region aspect where Ash takes out a Thunder Stone he received in Vermillion City and Pikachu legitimately considers evolving. It felt like one of the rare episodes where Pikachu actually grew.

>Bye Bye Butterfree
Needs no introduction. Handles early game bug types and sets precedent for the more temporary members of Ash's team.

>Enter Pikachu
A neat backstory of Ash's Pikachu that handles friendship evolution well. Could get better if Pikachu meets its "parent" again down the line in Journeys.

>Memories in the Mist
Despite being comedy focused, SM oddly has 3 whole episodes dealing with the topic of death. This one seems the best, since it incorporates both Mallow's struggles with it, as well as Litten/Torracat's.

>Mega Evolution Specials
Pretty much why people don't lump Alain and Tobias together. It's a nice palate cleanser if you're weary of Ash and ties into the Ash episodes much better than other specials. XY would feel incomplete without these.

>EP 001
This was a great introduction. Pikachu's chubbier and meaner than he's settled into and Ash almost dies protecting him. Teasing Ho-oh at the end was the cherry on top.

>Pikachu's Goodbye
Shows Ash legitimately cares about what's best for Pikachu. It was also more convincing that Pikachu might leave given Bye Bye Butterfree happened not too long prior.

>Fighting Flyer With Fire
One of the anime's better deviations from the games. Ash and Falkner battle with no region reset and Falkner uses a Hoothoot like he should in the games.

Pretty much. It leaves Ash looking really damn good considering he's the only person in ALL OF SINNOH who managed to KO not only Darkrai but also 1-on-1 a fucking Latios. But still, yeah.

If the episode title and the number of episodes left of the series didn't spoil the outcome of the match then the backlash would've been harsher (granted when we learned of a Darkrai trainer people quickly lost hope of Ash winning). Still I remember seeing the forum reactions to Sceptile taking out Darkrai and when Tobias revealed his Latios, I can't even imagine what the reactions would be like today.

I actually considered putting "Pace - The Final Frontier!" (The final episode of Ash vs Brandon) in >>44572582 but it came down to mostly nitpicky stuff that's more the fault of the episode before it like not bringing back Pidgeot to complete the OG Kanto team, Ash only having to face the most recent regi Brandon caught, Ash hugging Bulbasaur and giving a speech to snap it out of confusion, and Ash losing Charizard in the dumbest way possible
