I actually didn't watch it as a kid even though I liked the anime back then. I watched it in 2015 with the rest of movies after I got a new interest in the franchise (i lost interest of Pokemon after Gen2 but came back after X/Y)

How long has it been since you watched them? I just rewatched all the movies up until Darkrai throughout the past couple weeks and I guarantee you that listening to Max for over an hour is way worse than “brooding”
Also watch the first movie in Japanese it’s way better

Any of the first 4 are kino, I personally love the unown one. After those four it steadily declines until 12 which is the last watchable one, at least for adults. It's almost a straight line with a few bumps along the way. I will state that I haven't seen any movies past x/y stuff so if it got better I wouldn't know.

M03 is good
Lucario and Darkrai are both top-tier .. also Oracion music
enjoyed M9, M11 & even M13

I liked the one with darkrai too
The hoppa one was alright too
The new mewtwo one was ruined for me because of the english voice actoe what where they thinking it is the same reason japanese dragon ball z sucks (male/ previously shown as masculine in voice with high pich woman or child voice)

I think Mewtwo strikes back got fucked over the hardest by the dub which turned Mewtwo into a world ending super villain, added some anti violence message, as well as other small things. The one thing that I do like more in the dub is 4kids Mewtwo theme.

I really enjoyed the short stories connecting with each other. Also it aired during the SM cancer anime artstyle so I liked it even more.

In the dub they made Mewtwo want to kill everyone on earth by conjuring up a storm that will sweep the world because of his hatred against humanity. In the original version it fully plays into Mewtwo being unsure what he is or why he exists and all he's trying to do is find what his place in the world is.
I guess to give a good idea of the differences in themes of the 2 versions here's the line from when Mewtwo returns to the Island after abandoning his armor and Giovanni
