IIRC they did want to make Delphox Fire/Fairy but because of the above reason and that they wanted to make sure the starters kept their type triangle thing going on.

Primarina's fairy is strong against Incineroar's dark, but decidueye's ghost doesn't do anything against primarina's fairy. So I don't think it's a rule anymore that starter subtypes also have to be weak against each other.

They’ll say shit like “design”, but anyone with a brain will know that’s not the issue. I personally love the mage theme it has going on, but Game Freak did it dirty by giving it lame animations that provides it with no personality + gimping it competitively.

If you look around the internet, non-cumskull fans of Delphox will show the thing possessing a wide array of personality, and do fun things and concepts with it. That said, it would’ve been nice if all the Kalos starters were given proper gender dimorphism, or at least made androgynous

Alakazam is a dead giveaway as to how magic is represented, and you have literal magic-based moves that’s been typed as psychic such as magic coat, magic powder, magic room etc, even the illusionist-based moves are classified as psychic.

A very important aspect that Delphox possesses is its ability to predict the future by concentrating on a flame’s center point. Given that foresight and predicting the future is inheritanely psychic, the typing for Delphox is fitting.

It’s not a stretch by any means considering it was a common method to kill people who were accused of witchcraft/wizardry. Considering that Delphox is literally based on the mage class, as stated by GF themselves, it’s a pretty reasonable justification.
Of course, Pokémon can be based on more than one thing, so there’s the fire breathing kitsune myth of Japanese legend as an origin as well.

Making Delphox fire/fairy while Greninja is water/dark is a retarded choice, no point in making the primary typing weaker to its counterpart if the secondary type is suddenly stronger, then the Gen 6 triangle would be ruined.

Dedenne is a stretch, but the tooth fairy is a mouse in France. It's meant to be those various "sneaks into people's houses" fairies. The definitely could've communicated it a bit better. Make the tail more wand-like or give it Sylveon eyes.

I love Delphox design and concept, but its animation in game is rigid and boring.

But my main complaint is that they unbalanced a trio that had to be perfectly balanced, they gave the rogue an ability that is more suited to a mage (Multimagic) and they gave the mage an ability to steal (Pickpocket), as well as practically ignored the fighter.

From a commercial point of view, I understand that Greninja was a well-crafted hit, but as a D&D fan, that ruins the idea of letting the player choose which class best suits their playstyle, when you are privileging one over others.

Cope, they’re literally called magic in Japanese. Magic powder is a psychic type move associated with Hatterene, who is a (primarily) psychic type witch.
Alakazam is literally a magician who is psychic typ. Delphox is another witch who is psychic type.
Magic is, and was always categorized as psychic since the beginning of Gen 1.

What category does delphox fall in? Due to the previous evolutions you would think it would go the majestic route but GF decided to give it this dusty dirty appearance and it doesnt look strong or cool either which is probably why it failed to get any traction.
