I really think the unova starters would have benefited from secondary types but poison for serperior makes no sense.

I'd either go fighting for all of their second types, or the typings drayano gave them in BlazeBlack which was grass dragon, fire ground, and water fighting

I don’t think Serperior should be Dragon but I don’t really see why a starter cannot. Mega Sceptile is Dragon and you get access to it in the mid-game. Fucking over any supposedly starter balance.

Why is It being a Mega a problem? And I’m assuming we’re just talking about starter balance from a type perspective, because suggesting that the starters have ever been evenly balanced in the grand scheme of things is just laughable.

The point is that the starters are always weak to each other regardless of how they all end up as. Shit ain't rocket science man. The Megas from a remake are a whole nother thing entirely, the original starters still maintain that circle perfectly and are intended to be that way from the start.

Exactly half the dual types we have in this game do not follow logical sense anyway. Just let Serp stay Pure Grass as he is, he already does a great job. Plus if he was poison he would suffer from 4 move syndrome.

HP Fire, Leaf Storm, Protect/Sub, & Glare/Leech seed is enough

The point I’m making is that they did not care for that in ORAS, where the Megas pretty much are the final stages. Hell the rival uses a Mega starter too just to prove that.
So while I can see your point if we’re talking about Serperior being another type from the start, but as for retyping it now I don’t see the problem at all.

Grass/Steel

Serperior is canonically based on Lady Oscar from the Rose of Versailles anime, and the designer outright likened Serp to a knight, and to the Musketeer trio as a;; being royal French knights. In truth, we actually got two Grass starters based on similar concepts ie European knights.

Steel helps Serperior's tanking capabilities while it sets up Glare/Leaf Storm, and reinforces its knightly basis.

This might sound crazy, but give Samurott Psychic typing with Psycho Cut as a new evo move. Samurai were also trained in meditation/zen arts, so it's fitting.

Steel < Fighting < Psychic <Steel (resist psychic)

HP is gone (and that's good) and dragon moves are less and less relevant.
It's just one of those grass types with a few good moves but nothing special. Glare is good, but it's no sleep and Contrary locks it into picking a non-accurate move as its STAB. Let's not forget shit like Swagger/Flatter -good thing they're less relevant now.
And don't get me started on Grass as a typing.
