It's pretty much a stretch of the definition no matter what your example is. There's little things like in RSE with the sunglasses guy off Rusturf Tunnel or collecting the fossil Pokemon and going to museums to get them revived, but again, obviously they're loose examples.

Frankly? I would rather instead of Side-Quests they just went back to doing shit like the Regi-Hunt where exploring locations gives you hints and resources to acquire rare legendary Pokemon or something else formidable.

Stuff like side-quests for items and what not are always dull, and i fear they'll stay dull unless they gave us overworld gameplay that is more involved than walking and biking.

The ones in USUM are pretty good, since they flesh out the world a bit. A few of them even have no reward aside from seeing a Pokemon do what they're said to do. Granted it's pretty jank sometimes and they clearly threw it together because scripting an event is way easier than making a new map or something and they only had like a year to make the game, but it's more effort than some of the fucking nothing we've been getting in first versions and ORAS. Interestingly, the Wild Area could have been used to do stuff like that, but unfortunately Game Freak are retarded and I don't think they've done much with that concept. Mayne the DLC did something, I didn't pay much attention there because I still haven't pirated SS to begin with.

Intrinsic is more about doing it being fun. You need both for a really good sidequest, the Regi one being the prime example. The quest itself is difficult but the reward is pretty great. On the other hand, something like USUM's sidequests only are good if you like Pokemon as a world, as the actual extrinsic rewards are pretty meh. MatthewMatosis talks about it in his BotW review in more detail, if you want some actual examples of how different kinds of motivation works in the context of a video game.

Helping people with various stuff (to catch a specific pokemon, to retrieve a pokemon that fled, to cross a forest...etc)
Mysterious shit (a rumour about a legendary/unknown pokemon in a deep forest cave, ancient treasures...etc)
Helping scientists to observe pokemon behavior...
Having a job about taking photos of wild pokemon for a nature based journal...

Obviously most of these would be boring under the current format, but in an Open World with an organic map and a coherent wildlife it would be great

Honestly, they don't even need to really be open world. Xenoblade 2's open-hallway design seems to fit better. There's still stuff to explore and figure out, but the main path is pretty straightforward. It's the logical conclusion from the map design of Kanto and Unova, in particular. Hoenn's also respectable in that regard, but you could argue it's more linear and has less to offer in optional content (although I'll argue it has some of the best extra content on routes themselves, give or take a weird bike related decision).

I'm currently piecing together a romhack fangame in my spare time and this thread has been informative already. so I figured I'd piggy back off OP and ask.

Do you find an evil team to be needed?
I currently don't have one thought up and don't really see what they would offer to the game other than some randos to fight, do yall find them needed for the adventure?
Or do you feel like exploring the region, catching monsters and becoming champ is satisfying on its own?

The old letter sidequest in Sword and Shield was good. It was short and sweet, placed along the way you were heading anyway, and gave you a choice scarf as the reward.

The SM Eeveelution quest was alright, too.

B2W2's Curtiss/Yancy Lost Item sidequest was okay, though it became a bit of a chore further in.

Not the Miltank sidequest in Johto though, that one was the worst. Neither TM you got for it was worth it and you still had to buy the milk you unlocked as a reward when it wasn't much better than what you had at the time.

Yes.

It's like an archetypal plot element, you're missing a lot of easy plot development and legendary introduction without them.

It's not, the standard original gameplay loop is pretty stale at this point. That's the entire reason this thread is helpful.

The quest is just an excuse to explore the area, but make sure there's an actual reward at the end of it.
If you want to be cheeky, i remember this one from Baldur's Gate, where you meet a guy who lost his cloak in the woods, you get it for him but he says he doesn't need it anymore because people heard about it and he's become a local celeb. You cast identify on the cloak and its got a decent bonus to Stealth.

You're going to those places anyway, so taking a two minute diversion to pick up a random item is good for world building. Especially if the guy is located in a central area like Lumiose that you pass through multiple times throughout the story. Assume the reward items are either repeatable, or themed. Like for example getting a mystic water when you bring a souvenir from the coastal town.

Again you're going there anyway. Starting the quest is a minor reward for exploration, it won't take you much effort and you'll get a decent item out of it.

Then there's a big kind of sidequest, which are more quest-lines. Things like the regi-stuff that take you all over the map, normally unlocking new areas you previously couldn't get to and more importantly are completely disconnected from the game's main plot. This kind of stuff is better for post-game and better having its story told through the environment more than through cutscenes.
