I don't even understand it. You can play doubles on Showdown. For absolutely free. And they don't arbitrarily ban a dozen things if you play the DOU format.

They didn't ban pokemon because of "doubles being unplayable" they did it for this season only as a change up, just like they did in gen 7 for a season.

They literally just don't care because Pokemon is mainly for a casual audience.
Devs of games with a more pronounced competitive scene tend to release balance patches when shit gets broken.
That requires effort, so Gamefreak doesn't do it, and it's left to the fans to try and cobble together something decent.

Grass starters apart from Venusaur literally never had glory in VGC until this year. Venusaur still never was top in usage% unlike the monkey. So Rillaboomer is a record breaker for grass starters anyway.

VGC was not unplayable. It was already perfect and couldn't be improved in any way.
Banning the top mons was just meant to spice up and improve the metagame, making it even more perfect.
And bringing back our banned bros who we missed will improve the metagame even more and make it even more perfecter.
Gamefreak is beyond reproach and every decision they make is correct and for the best.
