He tries to set up a win-win situation where either he gets the satisfaction of defeating you, or he uses his loss as an excuse to retire so he can escape Opal. It's his last-ditch effort, because he still thinks that it's all over for him. He's already been knocked down, after all.
But despite losing, he is surprised to find that people still like him and want to see him continue. His sense of self-worth, which he considered done with, is called into question, and he decides not to quit after all. He gets a second chance, where he still gets to be smug as hell, but is less of a selfish asshole.
