I played Renegade recently and it removes all the HMs (besides surf/waterfall/rock slide)
The region is still somehow a chore to go through, I think HMs are the least of its problems

Defog is optional. Cut/Rock Smash/Rock Climb/Waterfall can go on Bibarel and Fly, Surf, and Strength, the good moves, can be distributed among your team.
Sinnoh had good management for HMs at least. In Johto and Hoenn you had to waste moves or get another water type just for trash like Whirlpool and Dive.

Am I the only person who didn't have an HM Slave and just spread the moves amongst my team? When I first started discussing Pokemon online I was surprised people were irked by the HMs.

Nah, I did the same. Take Strength for example - nice filler move to take advantage of a 'mon's attack stat with dogshit levelups until they get something actually good (that you can meet the deleter when you can use surf in the overworld just compliments this strategy).

The biggest problem in Sinnoh is the Pokemon distribution/regional pokedex, it was fixed in Platinum (still not perfect) but keep in mind that the remakes will use the boring D/P regional dex.
