Should I get some of the older Pokémon games? Are they worth going back to even though I've played newer games?

Gen 1 is iffy. I finished playing Blue a few months back, was alright. No move deleters, held items, etc. made it a little weird.

Gen 2 aged very, very well. Crystal is great, would highly recommend playing it.

For me, Pokemon just improves as each Gen passes.
Maybe with the exception of Gen 5 to 6.

If you've already played the remakes and you want something different yeah. They're not bad games or anything, they're just (arguably) outclassed by modern alternatives. I'm assuming you're just talking about GB/GBC games here. If you want hard copies just make sure they have new batteries (Or you know how to replace them yourself)

I started out with HG/SS so I've never played through any of the earlier games.
I'd have to go for digital versions at the moment as I've lost my DS charger. So I'm stuck with buying Gen 1 and Gen 2. Very lame that they haven't got Emerald or I would get that one.

RBGY are fine to play to see the series at it's roots but it's kind of rough but still playable. Either version is fine to play, I went with yellow.
GSC aged well and are a natural improvement and evolution to gen 1. This was the gen I started with so maybe it's nostalgia but these are peak of classic pokemon.
RSE, might as well just play emerald for the definitive gen 3 experience, very good. FRLG are good gen 1 remakes with some extras.
Above applies to platinum and gen 4 as well. HGSS being the absolute best remakes and peak of gen 4.

I'm not sure whether to recommend FRLG over RBY. This would probably be an unpopular take, but I'd say play FRLG and if you still want to play Gen 1 play Yellow to get a slightly different experience.

I started with gen 4 and went and played gold on VC when it was released since I couldn't get HG at the time and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Kanto is obviously quite disappointing in comparison but the main game is great and I really liked the look of the sprites. But if you're playing gen 2, probably go for crystal since is makes encounter tables much better such that you can get a lot of pokemon much much earlier. Overall definitely an amazing game, and at the price it's at, it's a steal

How about the opposite situation? I played Gen 1 and Gen 2 back when I was a kid (I've also played their remakes) as well as Gen 3. I vaguely remember playing Black and quitting halfway through.
Which of the newer games are worth playing? I don't own a DS, but I own a 3DS and a Switch.

Gen 2 games aged horribly if you’re used to the newer games. They hold up aesthetically, but when you actually play them, the poor level curve, terrible Pokemon distribution, and shallow movepools make them much less enjoyable.

I will straight up say as someone who has played every Pokemon game on release, Gen 2 and especially gen 1 are archaic as fuck.
That being said, I personally find the earlier gens fun to play but it's mostly my Nostalgia goggles doing the talking.
