I know people won't agree but I 100% agree that not being hindered by snow and bog would kill the feel. However if fog were exclusively an over world effect I wouldn't mind I'd rather defog just be a flash clone essentially

Not that anon, but my problem with HM is that most aren't good in battle and it takes a move/mon slot. Surf and Waterfall are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head that are good. I feel like if you buffed their power, like say bump Cut up to 80 for example, I think people would complain less about it.

If the moves were good in battle you wouldn't be sacrificing anything by teaching it to a mon. Ik it might sound retarded to some but I fully believe it was meant to be a trade off of overworld mobility for a move slot. Besides, I never use an HM slave and I've never felt the HMs gimped my team to the point of being unfair.
However if it were up to me I'd make the HMs have less power overall to be more consistent, lower the count to 4, and give them all individually more utility (Strength is now a 70 BP fighting move that pushes boulders, smashes rocks among other similar feats, etc)

Never saw it like that, but I find your take interesting. The way I see it, HMs are suppose to be more about your Pokemon helping you do stuff out of battle, showing the bond between a trainer and their mon. And while you could make the argument that in the case of G7, Ride Pokemons are similar in concept, they're not your own helping you, which diminishes the point imo.

I recall as a child, Pokemon helping me travel the world was really cool and showed that they aren't just for G-rated cockfighting. But as you get older, you get more cynical, and you see it more as a chore than something cool. Perhaps it's just my insane ramblings, but I've been thinking about more about HMs in the series and this came to mind.

That was seriously the best customization pkmn has ever seen and when it didn't come back it was the first time it really hit me that GF simply cannot continue good ideas to save their life.
