In fact, it's an incredible surprise that a character this well-written is in the type of merchandise-driven anime as Pokemon is.
Same as Clemont, who's still the best Brock-type character in the series once you remove the nostalgia goggles. Though Clemont suffers once his gym battle is taken care of and he gets sidelined, even if we do get the great dramatic moment with him and Clembot during the Team Flare arc.
But then, XY/XY&Z was the best written season, so it's expected.
