beat y. unfortunately Scarlet the jynx didn't get to try her hand at the pokemon league, as she was taken from the team along victory road. rip comrade ;__;7. Marilyn the gothorita took her spot and proved to be the special attacker we needed to beat the likes of siebold's gyarados and starmie. the league was as underwhelming as it was in the x run, with nobody ever posing a threat. the idea of a mega gardevoir, the theoretically best pokemon in the league, going down in one shot from a durant is pretty funny.
on to omega ruby! another starterless run, which i always find cool to do.

I mean, jb right above me has gotten 5, so I'd say 3 is a little less impressive (technically 4, but the shiny Liepard I got in Black died), but for me it's been a combination between not using repels at all, doing a lot of EV training in older games (aka having to battle hundreds of mons to max out stats) and just good old fashioned luck

hardest was probably black and black 2 because i've never played a gen 5 game before doing this. just not knowing the games well like i do gen 3 and hgss made things difficult. easiest was red or silver since i beat those with zero deaths. early gen AI helped a lot there. hgss is my favorite game in the series, and i enjoyed doing them starterless. i also really enjoyed black 2 and white 2 for having never played it before, built upon all the really solid things bw did. made the runs super fun.

Haven't done so yet, I have many years experience of doing nuzlockes, but I do use a set of rules that make the games a tough but fair challenge

I consider any gift/buyable mon completely fair game, most people put restrictions on them like having a giftmon count for the route they're on or not allowing them at all, but I personally find it more fun to consider them extra freebies
As long as it conforms to the spirit of a nuzlocke, I'm of the school of thought that you should pick the additional rules that make the games more fun for you

Clemont beaten, Yuna did most of the heavy lifting with Trixie coming in to clean up a weakened Heliolisk and an uppity Emolga.
Thankfully getting a little more balance to the team, sad that I might not be able to evolve Honda at all unless I catch a Dark-type miraculously, but I'll hold out hope for now

At some point, I think I'll try and use a slightly different take on the Level Cap so that the Nuzlocke rules do not massively favor the Slow Exp Group over the faster ones as much as it usually does.
Using "Exp Caps" is probably the best way,though obviously I'd have to decided how to handle it if a later gym has a lower Exp Cap than an earlier one that is mandatory to beat first.
Included a picture of how Exp Caps would look in FireRed/LeafGreen.

Interesting idea. I do notice that the level cap for your team actually becomes more restrictive going from Koga to Sabrina, meaning you may have to take on Sabrina first.

Boy do I feel that, Gen 4 was a little slow to get through, but I didn't mind since I love it, but the fatigue is really setting in with Gen 6, right here around Anistar is usually where 95% of my casual X/Y lockes have died previously and I get why

A somewhat less accurate system that still gets the job done fairly well is to just treat all gym leader aces as Medium Fast (most common exp group).
That way, you don't have to look up the exp rate of every ace, but the exp cap still lets the different groups have a notable impact.

Damn the fucking scientist in Mt Moon nearly had me with his Magnemite. I had to use items during the fight even though I made it a rule to not use any.
Literally all my team members were weak to Electric attacks (Squirtle, Pidgey, Butterfree, Zubat). I had to sacrifice my freshly caught Zubat and Sand attack him with Pidgey to beat him. Rip Zubat.

I was worried about Diantha, mostly because of her Mega Gardevoir and it being good against most of my team. My worries were unfounded though because Karuka was able to get 3 Nasty Plots durring Gourgeist and just OHKO swept with Flamethrower/Dark Pulse.

Everything went much better than expected, every single fight was a solo effort from one mon, Winston taking out Wikstrom and Drasna, Céline defeating Siebold and Charles having the honor of defeating Malva and Diantha

That's a complicated question. If you strip the game of the elements which make XY notoriously easy, mainly Exp. Share and Megas, it can be pretty tough. There are a some pretty nasty difficulty spikes such as you'll start to bleed pokemon after you beat the Laverre Gym Leader. This was mainly my fault, but my run of Y had 26 deaths. Avoid the cafes for grinding.

Shield is fairly challenging if you stick to using level caps by rotating team members, otherwise the inability to turn off Exp Share will trivialize it.
I found it more challenging than most of the GBA games, for example(though Emerald was harder).

Also Raihan is really hard to beat without losing anyone during his gym battle, though his rematch is a complete joke. Leon is actually pretty tough as well. That Haxorus is a big problem on set mode.

I've failed a ton of these but I have a good feeling about this one. I think this time around I need to treat everything I catch as valuable in some regard instead of boxing stuff early on without already having a full team. For instance, that Kakuna seems worthless, but if I can't find an Oddish after Nugget Bridge, that Twineedle might be the only thing that can take down Misty's Starmie without having several casualties in the process. Here's hoping nothing dies during grinding.

aight, a question to keep the thread going: when building a team, what kind of roles do you prioritize? for example, this is typically how i roll:

1) starter when available for runs
2) physical attacker, i feel like they're usually better in nuzlockes and are often more tanky
3) surfer. switching out a team member for a surf slave sucks imo. i didn't intend for this to happen but i've champed a surfer every single run. less important than a flyer imo.
4) ground type. up until later gens where steel hits fairy for se damage, i always tried to have a ground type on the team. 13 of my 21 runs had at least one ground type

when one of these roles on my team die i immediately try and replace it with a bench/new catch that will fill a similar role. like i didn't fill my last slot with a benched baltoy because i needed a surfer.

maybe this question doesn't make a ton of sense idk

Starter and Surfer usually.
Water is generally a really good type. Quite a few of them are pretty bulky, only 2 weaknesses, and almost always get strong moves; Surf/Waterfall are guaranteed in the games they are in and hit hard, Scald since gen 5 is also amazing.

I'll try to make sure I'm not all special or physical attackers for when I hit something that's pretty wall-y for that type.

Also to add, Pokemon to fly is more of a luxury than a requirement, and for Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, you're going to be surfing quite a bit, so having a surfer stay on your team makes a lot of sense.

I build solely off knowledge of what I know is good already in game since the games I’ve nuzlocked I know fairly well.
I am going to start an ultra moon nuzlocke though with no EXP share. This will require a lot more strategy I think than my normal “building” style.
I know about ultra necrozma, but never finished any gen 7 game. Furthest I’ve made it is the electric trial and quit for whatever reason.
Anyone done USUM no EXP share? How was it? For reference I beat my platinum nuzlocke first try so I am not 100% shit.

It's the hardest game in the series. I felt obliged to EV train after the reaching Tapu Village because every trainer has pokémon with good IVs, EVs and high bp stab, so they can 2HKO pretty much any pokémon. That might not be so troublesome if you play on switch mode, though. Also, you will probably want to turn the exp share on at times, like after the ghost trial and after Lusamine.

In your average run I tend not to think about my team comp too much, only having in mind that I have a Surfer and preferably a Flyer and that I don't have mons that fulfill the same roles (like having two Fire types that cover just about the same things as each other)
Exceptions are in games where Lance is present, where I make a point to have a mon with Electric/Ice coverage that can solo his team, the Johto games where I prioritize having a Ground type for Red and USUM where having either Malamar or Zoroark is a must for Ultra Necrozma

Fuck, I totally forgot about this. I'm at the point now where I can only stand romhacks of Gen 3-5. The physical-special split has spoiled me, the remakes of Gens 1 & 2 are wonderful, and there's just way too much bullshit in later gens like the thing with Lati@s.
I'm playing Sacred Gold right now, and it has a mandatory Eevee and evolutionary stone, but even that doesn't break the game in half like that Lati@s moment. Also I boxed it and my starter immediately anyway, so who cares. I know I can just box Lati@s too, but being handed a legend with a mega is too much for me.

I almost always want a Water type, not for HMs alone, but because the type is really good. For certain regions I will prioritise certain types or moves, like Electric in gens 1 and 3, or Steel when I can. Other than that, I just like to use things that are fun, never used before, unique, or just to fill holes in my team composition.

Some days you just get something fucking weird or unique and you just have to use it, like Carbink.

Opposite approach to what I'm doing. I've found that especially in Gen 1 I get caught off guard easily, and if something dies in a strong team of 3 it becomes a lot harder to replace. It's not really an issue until the Koffing's and Graveler's start showing up. I think I'm going to play it safe and just phase out certain Pokemon once I catch more prominent team members, that way if I have to pull from reserves things are already at a semi-reasonable level.

yeah azumarill is a solid wall, i champed it in gen 3 before it got a fairy typing. umbreon is nice and tanky but i didn't really use it as a wall, but a counter for will's team and red's espeon. my best walls have actually been venasaur and meganium surprisingly.

Playing Fire Red Omega, and even the first gym was harrowing. With my rules I am only allowed to bring pokemon equal to or less than the level of the gym leader's.

I ended up sweeping most of his team, but Brock's Vulpix put to sleep and confused my Mankey. It then did the same to my Houndour. It got crazy luck on its hypnosis, hitting it first try and four pokemon in a row. Had to wait it out and fight with all my pokemon confused.

No deaths though in the end, just a narrow escape.

After losing out on a Machop from a crit, and two Growlithes with roar, i finally bagged Skinwalker the Doduo and Snufkin the Eevee. I thought about evolving him into Flareon but saw that it wouldn't even learn any fire type moves until Level 31 so i opted to teach Skinwalker Fly instead, With Klaus having Ice Beam for back up. I also really just don't like Flareon.

Before that i had my first death in Yutaka the Mankey to a Gravellers Self Destruct, right after i caught a Voltorb and let it learn it as some poetic justice. It might come in handy.

For a regionlocke I'd say that's pretty much fully optimal, only thing I'd add is putting HGSS over Crystal (it's really just personal preference, they're both great, but HGSS adds quite a bit like QoL stuff and some new stuff) and playing either just Black/White or both Black/White and BW2, since BW2 differs enough from the originals to warrant a playthrough to go through nu-Unova

I think HGSS might be more challenging just because they increased Red's levels and fleshed out Kantoooooo a bit more, also pokemon get a lot better coverage and levelup moves. This last part also works to your advantage.
My vote is crystal for the soul.
Its been a long time since I've played gen 5, but yeah I think you need to play both.

Considering Sharpedo can almost solo the elite four, I would say its salvageable. If Shark is like level 60 or something if you don't have a special attack boosting nature, or 55-56 with a special attack boosting nature, you can guarantee outspeed and OHKO 90% of the E4. The only trouble will be Glacia and some of Wallace, an electric type would be really nice. Maybe you could try for raichu if you still have safari zone encounters. At this point in the game sadly, most of your land encounters may be used up. There is still hope though.
Depending on safari I would try to raise up:
>definitely sharpedo he's your ace with crunch, ice beam, taunt and maybe double edge, don't even need surf
>raichu, he will be extremely useful for Wallace and Glacia
>pelipper can tank some hits from Wallace and possibly toxic stall if something goes wrong against Drake
>if not raichu, try to raise a lanturn if lucky enough to get one
Literally so many water routes with the same encounters, there is no shame in getting a copy of one of your team members in order to have a backup. If sharpedo goes down, another one could be really fucking clutch.
This would be quite the grind though

finished with omega ruby. unfortunately, Estelle the torkoal did not make it with us, as she was taken down while we pushed through victory road. rip comrade ;__;7. Lawson the zangoose took her spot, and had to grind quite a bit to catch him up to speed. lucking, setting up some secret base blissey trainers made the last bit of grinding go by real fast.
league was pretty underwhelming up until steven, and even he wasn't bad. overall, omega ruby was "meh" especially compared to emerald.
alpha sapphire is next, might take a break to just, idk, play something that isn't pokemon.
