I don't hate it. I just prefer Venusaur to it. It's still in the upper tier of Starter designs, along with mons like Infernape and Sceptile.

Most people who hate him are retarded "muh Wartortle tail, why isn't it exactly like wartortle but big". Other than that the design is relatively inoffensive, but it suffers because of that too; a lot of venusaur fans are the "I'm so unique for liking what is conventially unliked", while Blastoise is squarely in the middle ground of the other two and so doesn't have either camp liking it.
