Calem had no personality but he wasn't an ex-sucessful trainer that's undergoing depression.
Nate had no personality but he clearly wasn't an expert secret agent that's good at everything.
Essentia and Malva are actually relevant to the main story

BW, XY and SM could've easily have had a 1:1 adaptation to manga, yet they weren't.
