If you've giving you and your ally Speed buffs, Aurora Veil, or setting Terrain then you're much better off than using it defensively. I'm not defending always cracking it first turn, but giving yourself momentum can make it much harder for your opponent to regain ground.

Also, giving yourself the advantage as soon as possible is the best strategy because you'll be punching holes in the opponent's team immediately and forcing them to play to your momentum, or even robbing them of the ability to react if your mon boosts to become strong and fast enough.
