Is there something wrong with me if I don't like the anime? Always felt like it was childish and could never get into it, despite really wanting to. I've tried every season for at least 10 eps each. I'm not a genwunner.

The only seasons that are even a little good are indigo and orange because of the 90s anime camp and you can still get that better in other shows

The problem of the anime is that it wants to be both entirely static and episodic and also be a developing story at the same time, failing at both as a result.

Yeah I don't think the original series hold up at all. Digimon back then was way better and I'm the last to admit that.
I always figured it was kind of an action anime with some of the lore+cozyness from the games brought to life and that that was the appeal. Are those three things not redeeming qualities? I'm genuinely curious, I'm obsessed with Pokemon (unfortunately) but for some reason can't understand the appeal of the anime

It's a comfy, campy adventure through the early days of the series before all the details were nailed down yet, the english dub in particular takes the comedy up a notch.

It's mostly going to be nostalgic value carried by the comfy vibes and campy fun, if that doesn't appeal to you I don't blame you, try the mangas instead.
Indigo is best
Orange is good too
Johto is fun but it drags on for fucking ever with filler
Everything beyond is shit

I never liked the anime either. It's not that it shows off pokemon badly or how it's terribly animated or anything, im not petty like that. I just think it's boring. Ash is boring and weak, and I strongly dislike his character. Goh is barely a step up, and I don't enjoy watching him either, especially with such a mundane goal. I can't stand weak protagonists in almost any media, so it's not surprising to me that the anime is such a bore to watch. Also, anything that isn't a pokemon battle is extremely tiring and most likely not funny, even if its trying to be.

That said, Pokémon as a whole sucks at story-telling, so no surprising unless you like the pretentious edgy shit that is pokespe, in that case you have the brain of a 10 years old.
