Pokemon are very different, they are clearly of higher level thinking (at least most are capable of reaching higher level thinking), so they outpace dogs/common animals. MOST are not you're family/children, some are (See Zarude & Coco), but most are just you're partners and equal.

If they wish to have a friendship with you, then you have a simple friendship where you both train together similair to that of a Boxer and their Trainer and you fight. Its not slavery, its a teacher/student relationship. If you'd like to go beyond that where you both have equal amounts of autonomy in the relationship you can! Its all accordance to what the Pokemon and Human want out of said relationship.
The anime and games have gone out of there way so many time to establish that Pokemon are partners not slaves.

Pokemon make the choice to be with a human (This was even referenced in the games, Drayden IIRC), they are not your property, they are your companions who has willingly decided to join you similar to that of any of your other adventuring partners.
