Honestly it's a little odd that they chose to do it that way, but I can't blame them.

That being said, Masters may only be canon to itself, the same way other games/media are canon to themselves.

For example, in PokeSpe, Red starts with a Poliwhirl, and the starter that he gets from Oak is Bulbasaur. That Bulbasaur is opposite his rival's Charmeleon, and the third wheel steals Squirtle.
