I'd be fine with them if they actually fleshed them out enough. Yugioh could get away with it because they had a weekly anime, multiple manga, and expansions every three months to fully flesh out their mechanics before ditching them. And in the ARC-V era, they brought all of those mechanics back and added more onto them.
With Pokemon, you get the base games, followed by third versions/remakes/whatever to add a couple more Pokemon to the current gimmick's reach. No other media are allowed to introduce their own additions and such, and the anime barely touches the gimmicks or adds anything to them.
