Except you forgot the part where the manual packaged with the game contained an entire page dedicated to instructing braille, with the first room in Sealed Chamber further corroborating this to any kid (read: every kid) who decided to read it once they got there, including myself. I never owned a strategy guide and completed it just fine because I knew of braille and recognized that was probably what it was. I went to my dad and we spent the next 30 minutes deciphering the code together and eventually finding the Regis. It was an amazing bonding experience with my dad that I still remember fondly because it was something we did together. Also one of the only fulfilling puzzles in pokemon ever, I enjoyed finding some hidden away stuff in gen 4 but nothing else really compared

I solved it without needing a guide and this was before I had internet. There was a braille guide in the instruction booklet. You would know that if you had actually played the game when it came out instead of reading about it on the internet.

I can't speak for Japan but I remember reading the guide as a kid and wondering why they just randomly dropped braille in there. Once I got to the ruins, I pieced together that this was the reason. I did the Regi stuff without Internet and as I recall it was really quite fun.

well, my friends and I solved it by asking everyone in the entire school.
eventually, an interested teacher overheard it and told us it was braille. it was a kino moment where the four of us and the big teach had us huddled around his desk laptop looking at braille ciphers and watching our eyes light up with wonder as we finally found out what the damn thing said.

Only the Ruby/Sapphire guides had the braille chart. They didn't bother to include it in Emerald because everyone knew the secret, they only changed the requirements. Same thing with ORAS.

The really fucked up one is the method to get Regigigas in ORAS. There isn't really anything in the game that hints to it.

There were some people who recognized it was braille and while they didnt know it did seek out resources at a library or even at a school playground that had a braille alphabet. Actual puzzles that made you think instead of a room where a siloutte jumps down at you.
