Why does literally every move in this show have to glow and explode? Look at this shit, that's just a fucking karate chop, is it really necessary? Can a simple physical blow not just be a simple physical blow and not have magical exploding energy tied to it?

Why the fuck do you think it has a type? If there was no energy, it wouldn't be a move. It would just be a normal karate chop, meaning that it wouldn't do any extra to Normal type Pokemon and it would affect Ghost types.

They're not even really consistent with it though. Grapploct uses Close Combat in the same episode and it's just rapidly punching normally, and it uses Octolock where it simply just restrains the opponent without any flashy bullshit.

I think for something like Dragon Claw it's kind of understandable though, where they literally manifest a claw-like gauntlet. It's kind of easier to buy a dragon type move being mystical or magical too, as opposed to something like Meowth scratching with his claws and having them glow because why not.

Not really, you'd have to show some kind of physical impact. Look at the middle pic of the OP, you can replace any reaction from the Farfetch'd with a big block of light.
Then in the bottom frame, you don't need to animate any movement because there's a huge smokecloud obscuring most of it.

That's the point though, ALL types are magical/mystical. Types are the elements of the Pokemon world. Pokemon belonging to those types are creatures who manipulate these elements.

The orange glow in Karate Chop? It's Fighting energy. The green glow in Dragon Claw or Dragon Tail? Dragon energy. Meowth's claws glowing? Normal energy.

Yeah, and just about all of the good ones do this.

The only real difference is that usually, stuff like this is reserved for special moves, but Pokemon almost exclusively use special moves, there aren't really any "normal" or non-magical attacks in Pokemon.

They didn't do this in the early seasons, when the show was still low-budget. They only started doing this once Pokemon was well-established as a franchise that would last for decades. So when Gen 3 rolled around, with their increased budget, the animators started making the battles flashier.

The 'realistic' battles were the best part of the old series though. Obviously it wasn't gory violence but it still felt like the Pokemon were actually fighting.

You'd get shit like Muk being basically impervious to all physical attacks, and fought by engulfing it's enemy. But it could easily be defeated by blasting it with water and washing it away.
It's obviously nothing like how the games work, but it felt like how a monster made of slime would actually function.

Then at some point they decided to go full autist and everything just follows what the games do. Pokemon just throw magical energy at each other until the plot says one of them drops.

It's not just Karate Chop, other physical Fighting type moves in the anime have the orange energy too. Like Revenge or Power-Up Punch. Basically the only Fighting-type attack that doesn't do this is Close Combat, which has always just been depicted as a non-magical flurry of punches and kicks. Which, going by anime logic, shouldn't count as a "move" and shouldn't take up one of a Pokemon's four moveslots, but it is what it is.

Actual kids media (Pokemon, Doraemon, etc.) in Japan is super sanitized. The more violent stuff is usually aimed at teenagers. That's literally what the term "shonen" means, that it's aimed at teenage boys. Japan is only less restrained when it comes to core in teen and adult media. Their kids media is about the same as ours.

No actual water, they're just waving their tail like a wave and it's considered a Water type attack for no reason other than game mechanics. For attacks like that, which are clearly not elemental in any way and only have that type because the game mechanics demand it, it works.

I think its because Anubis is the god of death and so would be associated with bones, plus he's always depicted with a staff, but in that case I would have much rather Lucario have been Ghost/Fighting with the original black/gold color scheme of the statues. Maybe have a smoke tail and white eyes to match. I get why he's Steel, but it would have been pretty neat.
Real question is why doesn't Duskull or Cofagrigus get any of the bone moves?

That's the whole point. They know it, we know it. The game stepped around it by always animating effects of the moves instead of the 'mon straight-up hitting it but then turning around and reminding people of the real-life instances of setting animals on each other to fight (all the way up from rats to MMA's) by having the fantasy creatures do it too is too near the knuckle.

Basically its because they don't want fights to look to graphic, violent, or 'realistic' looking. Its a show made for younger audiences, but not your older Shonen audience. They can't have Pokemon bodies getting cuts, bruises, and battle scars, heavy impacts, etc otherwise it gets dangerously close to the whole dog fighting thing they are trying to tip toe around. It follows reference material from Game Freak, so what's shown is canon to the games. Without Game Freak's reference material, the show wouldn't be able to exist as the animators would have no idea how Pokemon move or how they fight.

It's similar to how in the early anime, the "glow evolution" was reserved for special Pokemon like Clefairy and Abra, while Pokemon like Caterpie and Slowpoke just underwent metamorphasis. Then they just went "fuck it" and had every Pokemon glow when they evolve. Until Sun and Moon reintroduced actual transformation sequences for certain Pokemon, anyway.

They did do that originally, but once Stone Edge established that Pokemon can just summon rocks out of thin air, that became the norm for Rock type moves. In the Gen 3 and 4 animes, Rock Slide would use an existing rock for the attack. The summoning started in Gen 5.

Not him, but Rock Slide I'm okay with. It looks weird to see Pokemon materialize rocks from thin air, but there really isn't another way to show that. Rock Throw & Rock Tomb are okay as well. It would be better visually if they could go the Earthbending route, but then that would cause an issue when there is no rock/ground around the area.

That's not true, Pokemon fight in the wild all the time just fine. The fact that you can lose a wild battle speaks to that. Pokemon can't learn more than 4 moves, because the universe said so.

I'll make a list of things Pokemon gain from being around trainers. They don't NEED these things, they can handle themselves just fine, but these are great benefits.

>Medical Support.
>Non-murderous training partners.

Pokemon don't need any of these things to survive, but they are just nice benefits. If a Pokemon wants to thrive (See meowth) though, you need a humans help with that. A Pokemon would struggle to thrive in a human environment without a Human's aid (Just as we can't thrive without help), they might be able to thrive in the Pokemon environment by learning some new strategy/combat style or earning a group's respect, but beyond that you'd need a Trainer or Human to at least help you.
