Really, another thing which hurt Unova's starters was being so weak/underwhelming in-game when compared to such a large new dex of 156 new mons. They needed better typing(s) or stats/abilities.
Yes, the meta is not the end all be all, but being viewed as useful or powerful helps players take a second look and sometimes appreciate the Pokemon.
Think I may play that BW rom-hack (Blaze/Volt) with the altered typing(s) again, as Water/Fighting Dewott/Samurott was quite enjoyable. Grass/Dragon Serperior doesn't become enjoyable till late game, but contrary reversing shit early on was pretty hilarious.
