It doesn't fucking matter whether they play the games. The 9th episode proves that they do know how the games work, but choose to do things differently. Plus, Game Freak literally provides them with reference material, and they follow said reference material. Game Freak supervises the anime, so everything that the Pokemon do in it is canon.

What I'm more interested in is how strong these guys are and where they belong in the Pokemon world. People like Brandon exclusively rep legendary Pokemon so there's nothing else to apply to him, and Anabel even keeps hers as a Battle Tree opponent after dimension traveling to the megaverse, while Palmer shows up in-plot, is brought up by Barry as a legendary battler, and is implied to have been on a region-spanning adventure just like the protag and Barry, starting off the exact same way the player's adventure starts in DP: by getting mauled by a bunch of wild Pokemon.
Are they superhuman battlers above Champion status, protag-tier trainers who befriend legendaries and go on their own quests, just some random faces to apply to game mechanics, or are they still weaker than a generic gym leader or E4?

Really though, both Gary Oak & N also considered themselves the strongest in the world at the height of their power. In Leon's case, I do suppose it's more likely as Galar is so heavily advertised, and time-wise said events happened sooner.

It's not like we should ever expect for someone like Mustard to hear about the above considering themselves world strongest, become offended, and hop over to their regions to whip their asses, either.

If GF says Leon (& Mustard) is/was the actual Poke'verse Whitebeard, then it's so. Gameplay/story segregation be damned.

In BW, she's older, more mature, and has more control over her powers, so she can handle losing and doesn't need him to battle for her anymore.
