Being buried in sand works in 2D artwork and as a 2D sprite. It doesn't work when Hippowdon needs to actually be able to move.

Because basing the 3d models around an actual dynamic pose was likely too hard for them. Literally every single was is just standing there in the most neutral stance possible. For some pokemon it's ok, but for others like Hippowdon it REALLY ruins their entire aesthetic

Difference is that Gengar is a ghost partially phasing into the ground. Being burried doesn't impede its movement in any way. Hippowdon is just a hippo, but with earth elemental powers. It can't move when it's buried.

I don't think the buried in sand thing really doesn't work in 3d unfortunately, Hippo is a pokemon with a design that was really meant for 2d static images and it sucks because it's buried in sand gimmick is so cool.

It would still need to get out of the sand to move.

The pile of sand was never meant to be interpreted as part of the Pokemon's design anyway. Hippowdon lives in deserts and the sand was meant to be interpreted it as it bathing in sand the same real hippos do in water, not as it swimming in sand.

It could do that, but that's not what Game Freak had in mind when designing it, and it's too late to retcon it. It's already been established as canon that Hippowdon does not swim through sand in battle.

Anon what he's trying to say is that Hippowdon attacking requires him to be mobile and him being in a mound of sand doesn't work when Hippowdon has to slam it's feet on the ground and charge forward for attacking.
