The games are like they are because gamefreak expects the average player to just use whatever pokemon they find and then bolster their movesets with TMs and such when necessary. If you grind or breed for good natures or good IVs you're trying too hard.
Personally I usually just plan a team of 6 or so pokemon with decent synergy (Minimal overlapping types weakness or roles) that I haven't used before and and then use them. When it comes to natures IVs or abilities I just make do with what I get, and it's lead to some really interesting sets like running special Raticate because it had a modest nature and a perfect Sp.Attack IV. The games are more fun that way anyway.
